will it be able to copy (burn to dvd) the programs that I've saved from the some of the premium channels, or are these encrypted to prevent this?
-
If you are talking HBO/Showtime, I've never had a problem recording them from my TWC DVR over to the ILO.

Can you transfer recoreded tv shows from the HD to a desktop computer for editing?

Upgrade the HDD to 300GB immediately with the following link:

About 3 or 4 weeks ago I bought a Pioneer DVR-531H-s stand alone DVD recorder from WALMART but they had a stack of the ILO DVDRHD04 and the price was only $228 or so.
Of the 4 WALMARTS in my area this was the only store that had the ILO units.
So check your local stores before buying on-line.

The on-line store is overpriced.
My recent trip to NYC from buffalo, NY, I searched at least 10 Wal-Mart stores and superstores, no sign of HD04 and I bought the 531H. A bit disppointed with 531H PQ, as it generally records darker, less contrast, and not as sharp as my Daytek P30 or ILO R04.Sam Ontario -
Sam, have you setup the custom settings, there are three. They will let you adjust sharpness, noise reduction white level, black level, IRE 0 or 7.5 gamma, chroma etc.
It appears that you do not like the defaults so go to the custom settings and adjust to your liking.
IMO it is a great machine with much control over the way the input signal is configured unlike your Daytek or ILO where wysiwyg and no control over settings.
The problem as I see it is you have a fancy adjustable item and are using it as a simple device, not its forte. The adjustable times for recordings that let you get the best bitrate and adustments to the picture make it a winner for me. Using these adjustments I was able to improve a poor quality VHS. The source tape had the people looking more like Martiasn than human, was not very sharp , bad white level and black level. I corrected all those faults in the Pioneer and the end result looked much better than the original. Not perfect but much better until, if ever, I find a better copy on tape or it becomes available on DVD.
Good Luck -
TBoneit,
To be honest, I have not put too much time in this new toy. I will give the custom settings a try this weekend. Thanks for the tips.Sam Ontario -
Sam, and the nice thing is you can see the effect of the settings as you make them. That'll let you tweak to perfection. Just read the manual I'm not at the machine right now and can not describe the how toos from memory but they are in the manual.
One other nice feature is how easy to edit from the hard drive. All the usual playback features work for editing too. FF/Rev, Slow-Mo. Pause and then frame by frame, Skip forward or skip backwards.
Good Luck and Enjoy -

Do you think this unit is like the older disconcinued RHD04 and can accept a hack or is like the LiteOn rebaged 5005X [iloRHDO4] that will not, and is not firmware downgradable. -
LCSHG,
No answer until someone try the newly available HD04 units.
See this thread (if you have not seen it b4):

To confirm, saw 1 HD04 in a regular Walmart near me and 4 or so in a SuperWalmart.
Have been thinking about picking up one until I saw that the Pioneer 531's price dropped to $298 this week (was $338 on Sunday). I am a big fan of Pioneer and the price drop is making me think of picking up that unit instead.
A sub$300 HD Pioneer unit, whodathunk.

[jbarm] can you check the price. The price given to [kirky] seems correct. I haven't heard back from WalMart online yet. I think they show it on line at the wrong price. The post by [Futcilives] backs up ;Kirky]The stores in my area have none.
The Pioneer has some great reports and is a good unit but it has some problems with poor VHS tapes and some programing. Copy protection and compliance could be a problem It can't be hacked like the LiteOn/ilo they are not combliant and will record from a tivo to disk. -
WalMart.com says the ilo HD04 is out of stock, but they have the HD05 for $98.74. The HD04 was $95. I don't know what the difference between the two is. Maybe it's like they said about their guitar amps that went up to 11 instead of 10 in "This Is Spinal Tap": "It's one higher now, innit?"

There were two models of the ilo. The RH04 witheout HDD and the RHD04 with HDD. they wre discontinued. The R04 is replaced by the 05. It now appears that the RHD04 is reinstated
Tje 05 is cyberhome. The o4 is LiteOn. Big difference in compliance and operation. The HD04 was never down to $95.00 it was the R04. I checked with WalMart online, it is out of stock. Some stores do have[They Say] the ilo RHD04 but it is now listed as the RH04. -

I happened to find one at a local Walmart for $229.00 therefore I did not purchase online. Unfortunately it is listed out of stock again at Walmart.com. -
If you have a Costco account I would recommend purchasing the LVW-5045 for $299 over the HD04 for $228. Compare the features and decide whether or not it's worth $70.

Did you buy the ilo RHD04? I have one, about a year, has worked great.
I would like to get another. but can't find one except ebay. The LiteOn 5045 is a good recommendation it has a 160 gb HDD. -

The latest firmware upgrade allows MP3 copying to the hard drive, which is real special but, when playing MP3s in shuffle mode it will only cycle through approx 100 tracks. In other words if you have a total of 500 songs it will only play within the first 100 until they all have been played then it will play selections out of the next 100 and so on. It would be nice to find a solution to this problem.
I have not had any experience with the Lite-on 5045. The 160GB hard drive is nice, if you need that much space the ILO can be upgraded to this size hard drive. The better features of this machine vs. the DVDRHD04 is that it can record on CDR/RW and DVD-R/RW. Although I am strictly DVDR/RW+ there may be times when the store might only have DVDR/RW-. I would rather have the 5045 if it is a dependable unit, but there is no where that sells them in my area. I am just estimating here but I would say within a year most all set top DVD recorders will be double layer capable, so you might want to keep that in mind when pricing a recorder now.
I am also testing a Philips HDRW720 for $229 no manual, cables or box. The only advantage it seems to have over the ILO is AC3 encoding (2 channel) and an 8 hour record mode for the quantity vs. quality times. The hacks and the firmware upgrades that can be used on the ILO make it more valuable to me.
I don't know where you are but the Walmart in Dunn, N.C. said they had five ILO DVDRHD04s a little more than a month ago.You have to ask for them in electronics.
