I have a video file that opens with wimdows media player it extension says avi when i try to convert it in tmpg express or tmpg plus i get errors that say cant open or unsupported. How can i tell what type it is to convert it to mpeg

AVIcodec or Gspot will tell you more about the format of the file. There are many 'flavors' of AVI. They will also tell you what codec to use. You install the suggested codec and TMPGEnc should be able to recognize it. But there are a lot of variations in video and audio formats within AVIs. There is really no 'standard' AVI.
