  1. Is it possible to burn dvd's that are sold as "2x" or "4x" at 8x or faster if your burner supports it? How do you force your burner to do it? I use veritas and roxio. If so, is there a down side?

Even if it were possible, would you risk chances of creating coasters, more burn fails, increased instability and compatibility.

If you need to burn at higher speeds, then buy higher speed rated discs.

You mean you can still find somebody that will sell you 2x and 4x media?

For the most part no. However, Taiyo Yuden 8x discs are regularly burned at 12 and even 16x with good burners, with excellent results. It can vary from batch to batch, and you better know how to run and read a quality test to determine if you want to do that. I hate doing things over, so I always burn at the exact rated speed, no matter what. And all I use are Taiyo Yudens and Verbatim MCC code media. It's more of a sure thing that way.

    The simple answer is "No"

The complex, and dangerouse answer is "mabey" but depends on the following:
    1) Model/Manufacturer of DVD burner
    2) DVD Burner Firmware Revision
    3) Type of DVD Media (manufacturer NOT brand)
    4) Do you feel lucky?

Over Speeding media often requires hacked firmware (unsupported - VOIDS warranty), requires time and effort to test which media will overspeed successfully.

So unless you like to tinker/mess around and have extra time on your hands, I would recommend against it.

  7. You can if you have a BenQ 1620 or 1640 writer by using OverSpeed(inc. with QSuite 2.0).The downside is there will probably be more errors,as Skith mentioned it depends on the media.

    Possible ? Yes.
    Could cause problems ? Yes.
    Could be OK ? Yes.

I say Yes Yes Yes !

    ... but with a caveat.

I regularly burned Ritek G04s (4X) at 8X with my flashed Pioneer 107D. DVD-Videos were hit and miss (some worked, others didn't), but burning data was never a problem and didn't miss a beat.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I burn everything at 4x. Even the 8x & 16x discs....burn 'em all at 4x. 15 minutes is fast enough for me and I never make coasters.

Same here, I've found 4x to be 100% reliable, no coasters. And whats 15min for peace of mind

    cheers

Even Sonic 8x Fake ( TY ) will burn at 12 on my NEC 3500 and 16x on my duping tower with Pioneer 108s

Is it a good idea? Probably not. Althout if I do a project of about 90% disc capacity it sacans and plays fine, I would not want to sell that to a customer. For that I will use real TYs from a reputable dealer and burn at the rated speed.

Agreed. I rarely burn faster than 4x. that's why I never make coasters and pretty much ignore those here and elsewhere who claim some manufacturers and countries don't make good media. I don't care about the rating on the disc. I also do not mind waiting a few moments extra. I usually click burn and walk away from the computer anyways.

Not recommended even if you flash drive with firmware. Higher speeds for data seem to be ok but for video, i tend to stay at 4x. In agreement with all of the above. Also, If burnt too quick, then possibility of laser on home dvd player not picking it up and showing disc error.
