If there was a successful way to copy protect something (or anything for that matter), most of this VCD craze wouldn't be happening right now. There are a few ways to make sure your VCDs don't get copied:
1. Destroy your disc.
Problem - you can't watch your VCD anymore.
Solution - Don't destroy it.
2. Don't give it out.
Problem - none really, you can watch it all you want and no one can copy it from you, unless they sneak in your home at night, take it, copy it, and return it the next morning without you knowing it was ever gone. Damn dirty ninjas.
Solution - Get a deadbolt.
Hmm... that's about all I can think of.
But in all reality... if you can make it, someone else can find a way to copy it. What do you have that is so important that no one else get a copy of it? -
this is an interesting question. I'm pondering it as well.
Granted like mikewg said above
"But in all reality... if you can make it, someone else can find a way to copy it."
Anyone with half a brain can figure a way to copy it. But lets assume for second that most of the offline world doesn't have half a brain to think hard enough to break a simple encryption. Is there a form of encryption good enough to discourage the common idiot? That would be good enough for me, cuz I know a lot of bright intelligent people online, but its a completely different story offline. Most of the people I know offline (excluding myself) would giveup right away if a program like EZ CD Creator couldn't do the job for them on the first try.

try this it's not fool proof. Experiment for yourself though.

nice, thank you, I'm gonna go play with it right now. This should keep the common idiot in check.

yeah there is a good way just copy them with clonecd if u wanna sell them 2 people or lend them. It sort of screws up the first few sectors of the cd which sort of protects. there is away past it using isobuster but how many people would know that.

Yeah funnily enough I was wondering about vcd copy protection. A recent trip back from Malaysia saw me having obtained all of the up and coming cinema releases at 5 ringitt each (approx £1 or $1.4!!). Some of them could not be copied using a standard cd burner (raw mode?). When I explored the files on these particular cds, they seemed to have their own media player - a few strange icons(not appearing on other vcds I've got) and they wouldn't even convert by extracting the bin, converting to mpeg and burning the bin again. Just kept getting different error messages. Clonecd for whatever reason though, did the trick in all of these cases.....

Thanks so much! I think you all have given me enough to make my customer feel more secure!

pearl harbor from hk's vcd (w/ chinese sub) can't be copy or make image at all, not even in RAW mode. error on 90s% on all 3 cds. but one thing you can do about it is, copy the DAT file from the cd to hdd, and burn it.
so i don't think vcd protection is possible. -
I've not yet seen a VCD that could not be copied, have you guys tried BlindWrite Suite ? or CloneCD ? or VCDGear ? just about any if not all of those should be able to handle VCD to VCD or extracting the DAT file.

Hi,
I have tried CloneCD which works well up to a point. Unfortunately it seems if you copy the cd made with CloneCD to your hard drive then you can just burn it into another CD.
An area that does interest me is large dummy files but I am uncertain how to create these and how to add them to the CD prior to burning. For general protection this does seem to be a possible answer for me at least. Therefore if anyone can give me some advice on this I would be very grateful.
Thanking you
Take care

Personaly i'm not a big fan of CloneCD, I just mentioed it cause it's supposed to do it
How big is that VCD anyway ? 80min / 90min ? sometimes the movies come as overburned as a protection, so if your burner doesn't support Overburning, it will fail.

Wow, I replied to this message about a month ago... I'm a pretty funny guy.
"Damn dirty ninjas."
That's funny stuff! -
Hi,
What I am trying to find out is what is meant by creating dummy files which point at random parts of the CD, which are already used by other files. When copying the files from the hardisk to burn the CD it therefore seems that the image is bigger than the Data tracksize on the original CD.
Take care

Hi,
I assume that no one can give advice on dummy files

copy your vcd's with disk juggler & U can insert dummy's when copying. This little trick was used on dreamcast rips to pad them out so they would load faster. With vcd it would protect them & only... yes only disk juggler will copy them. Clone, blindwrite & isobuster will not even touch it. Just have a play with the setting in the program using a re-writable disk. I cant tell U where to get it from as I'm not allowed to give U a link but a quick google search will find it for U.

And on that note, it just goes to show that those friendly faces on this forum, enjoy providing copy protection as much as they enjoy removing it
p.s. Remind me not to buy Dave Knowle's films, there's nothing I hate more than a c.d. that's a real @itch to rip -
Someone way up this thread (?mikewg) answered it well...
Why exactly do you want to copy protect a home made VCD anyway? If you don't want anyone to copy it, then the simplest (and BEST) solution is to not lend it out to anyone...
Any method of copy protection on a VCD can be overcome by anyone persistent enough. After all, for the VCD to work at all, it has to be read by a player that doesn't know anything about copy protection.
Here's an idea:
Author your VCD such a way so that when it starts up, it displays a still screen for 10 seconds (that can't be exited by simply pressing a button) that says in BIG letters "STOLEN FROM 'insert your name'"
Regards.
