I just baught the Kosch DV-X721 and I think its better then the Philips player. The only cons are that the power button is not on the remote, you gotta press it on the player its self, and second problem is that the dvd tray doesnt open all the way, you kinda need to push in the dvd a bit. Other then that for its price, its amazing.
Thanks[/quote]

Kosch (Better)?? Why?? -
Great quality here. Never problems,Guess you just have bad luck.
What player you have? Price?
There seems to be more Whiner's and bashers when it comes to People having problems.
If everyone that loves this player posted a review It would out weigh the bad. -
I have 2 642 DVD players and they work great, while they don't play everything they do play DivX and some Xvid's without a problem. I haven't seen any other players worth considering, I wish there were. A portable DivX player would be great.

DVP642/37 .mine didn't last 6 month I bought it from amazon.com for $63 I think .if u check the reviews there u will notice 5 stars from new owners, and from old buyers the 1st thing u will read "Died after just 6 months,,,,,,,DEAD after 8 months,,,DEAD IN JUST 8 MONTHS"
and on top of that it comes with 3 months warranty .
anyways. Thanks God I know someone at wal-mart I took it to customer service and he helped me Switch it with an ILO 04 -
Like unclebud, I also have 2 and Only use it for Xivd/Divx. I have a DVD player for DVD's, I wouldn't call this a (DVD Player That Plays Xvid/Divx) I call it a Divx Player, Does convert Pal to NTSC very NICE to I might add.

My first 642 is 18 months old and works fine, the 2nd 642 was bought 6 months ago and while I don't use it alot, it does seem to work as well as the first unit. There are differences in the 2 players and I think the 2nd player is more cheaply made. If one were to fail, I'd expect it to be the later model.

Man, that $60 Philips 642 might be the most controversial DVD player ever made.

I also have 2 of the 642's. One is almost 2 years old, the other just over a year old. No issues with either one.
My $250 Panasonic on the other hand was in the shop 3 times the first 2 months. The last time it was "fixed" I gave it away.Google is your Friend -

Playback issues with files encoded with Ac-3,GMC for example. Benefits over the Phillips would be a much cheaper price,(on sale for $30.00 dollars Can) a compact size, A/V on regular DVDs looks to be better. Less artifacting. Liabilities include a crappy flimsy DVD tray, and cheap remote. But for $30.00 bucks you can't go wrong. A good alternative to the 642. -
It was during the Futureshop blow out. It was priced as 30 clams for one week.. They all sold out, in a day, and one of the saleaspeople gave me a raincheck. Picked up the new model for that price. :P
Keep an eye out during boxing day.
