I'm using a Hauppauge WinTV PVR 150 to transfer some lower-quality VHS video to my PC for future authoring to DVD, but I'm having some problems. While the quality of the source tape isn't that great, it's not horrible either. Yet when I capture it using the WinTV 2000 application the end result is much, much worse than the video itself. There's some weird color variations going on, and the video is overly grainy and "wavy". I uploaded an example to my site so you can see for yourself (.MPG, about 20 MB):

Now, when I use the card to capture better quality video, the resulting file is fine--it's about equal in quality to the source tape itself. I only have this problem when the source video is lower quality or grainier than normal.

Is there any way I can maybe enhance the video signal before it gets captured so I don't get these terrible results on the captured video? Thanks.

That's a noisy signal, nothing more. You need a TBC or a cleaner VCR to play it.

Thanks...any suggestions as to which TBC to use? (something affordable)

Or if getting a good new VCR is the answer, any recommendations?

EDIT: nevermind, I see the sticky thread...I'll do some research.

If it is first generation (recorded off-air) then it looks like a good candidate for a JVC VCR with TBC/DNR.

If it is 2nd generation or beyond (dubbed from another tape), then the TBC/DNR might not help much. https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=280213

Looks like a dub to me.
