Custom Matrices

Just wondering if it would be possible to add a custom matrix feature. Alot of the ones I use for other programs help encoding quality quite a bit.

Ok ran some tests and definately could tell a difference in those heavy compressed vcds when using a low bitrate matrice, it made the video smoother. Now as for Avi conversions I assume when the status panels says 6000kbs D1 the bitrate is gonna average around that number, so I only have one matrice really for that it's the Fox Home Entertainment matrice it's designed for 4000+ kbs the video came out looking very good but was a little jumpy. But I dont know if this is from the matrice or just the small size of the sample being set at such a high bitrate, so I'm gonna do a full movie test now and see how things look.

Got a divx avi file that was about 700mb and ran it through with the high bitrate matrice and it came out GREAT it took out the blockiness and really helped out with the picture. It defiantely works.

Just realized thereis no basic guide telling anyone how to use the custom matrices so here it is quick and simple. A matice has (for SVCD2DVD v2) to files one named intra.mtx the other nonintra.mtx use the matrice of your choice and just drop them into the SVCD2DVD folder. Both Files should be in this format or any as far as I know but this is one I usually see:

you can make your own by using any text editor and change the file type to *.mtx. But you cant use one matrice for all movies, you'll want to use one the handles the given bitrate. Most AVI/DIVX/XVID movies yield a high bitrate so a high bitrate matrice works well with these and gives a better quality. Basically just use a matrice that supports the bitrate of the movie your proccessing through SVCD2DVD.

Just let me see if I've got this right. Let's say I have two matrices, one for low bitrate and one for high bitrate. Both of these should have an intra.mtx and nonintra.mtx file of their own. I would have to move the correct files in and out of the SVCD2DVD folder to correspond with the bitrate I am encoding with. It seems that I can't have both in the SVCD2DVD folder in their own subfolders and then choose which one to use as SVCD2DVD doesn't recognize them as being there. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I've also noticed on the Doom9 website that their custom matrices are in .xcm format. Is there any way we could import these into SVCD2DVD?

At the current time that is how it is set up, hopefully when the final version is out it will be fixed so that we can just select which one we want to use at the time of encoding. And you are correct about the intra and nonintra files they are seperate, and you would have to take one out for the corresponding bitrate. And as for the doom9 matrices you should be able to convert them over to *.mtx with a text editor. I'm going to try some different formats of the mtx matices and see what happens.

xcm format is binary. if you can tell me anything about the format i will support it. If you have any ideas as to how to tackle the custom matix concept in a user friendly way (bearing in mind that only about 5% of people will use it) then i will gladly listen.

I'd be happy with a check box to possibly click under the encode options,that way the user can decide if they want to use the matrice option or not and 2 browse buttons to simply just search for the intra and nonintra matrices to use. Maybe just keep them seperate in a matrice folder under the svcd2dvd folder. And as for xcm format I dont really know much about it, I only use the mtx format, but I could look into it.

Just a quick follow-up I checked out those xcm matrices and it would be easy enough to open them in Rockas Matrix Editor and import them into mtx IF any one really needs to use them.

somnus, as the matrix guy, can you point me in the right direction for a high bitrate matix set? I am looking for a default matrix set for HDTV to DVD encodes so starting with sources of 10+mbs encoding to around 7800kbs.

Sure chris I'll have a look when I get home this afternoon (I'm in the states on the eastcoast) I've got some high bitrate matrices I can send over. Oh and have you decided on how the matricwe function may be added yet?
