Good book on DVD recorder chipsets! Players too!

    http://www.electronics.ca/reports/ic/dvd_recorder.html

This study examines all semiconductor products that go into DVD players and recorders, and it forecasts the 2004-2008 worldwide revenue and bill-of-materials (BOM) costs for this market. Overall revenue will grow from $2.4 billion to $3.7 billion, and DVD recorder semiconductors will switch places with DVD player semiconductors as the primary market driver.

DVD player and recorder semiconductor revenue will grow steadily through the forecast period of 2004-2008, with a notable decline in DVD player semiconductor revenue and a significant ramp in DVD recorder revenue. DVD recorder semiconductor revenue will drive and support the DVD semiconductor revenue through this forecast period.

Companies Covered: Philips Semiconductor, ESS Technology, Zoran, LSI Logic, NEC Electronics, MediaTek , Cirrus Logic, Sony Electronics , Pioneer, Panasonic, Philips Electronics, Lite-On, Go Video, New Line Cinema , Warner Brothers, Disney, LG, Conexant, Paramount, Fox Entertainment, Universal ,Sunplus, Apex, ALI

Yes, but it does not seem to be appearing in recorders.

Maybe but the docs are good.

I should have said read all the manufacturer info for those listed. $4500 is alot to spend.

  5. I have read such reports in other business segments. My opinion is you are not missing much. Most of the financial and company information is gathered from annual and quarterly reports. You can buy a share of stock in each company and get better, more recent info and maybe make a few dollars in the process. The description of products is generally less than you can find from the manufacturer's web site.

The predictions are gleamed from reports freely available in industry magazines which means they can be fairly inaccurate.

Getting technical information from manufacturers in this industry is more difficult than most. When I tried to get a data sheet on the LSI Domino chips, they require signing a non-disclosure agreement, even though the information is in service manuals for the products in which they are used. One interesting item, the LSI chips are not a distribution item, so they are only sold direct to manufacturers. Unfortunately, manufacturers mark up the price quite a bit, more so than distributors.
