hey there, i was able to convert my mkv file to avi with Baldrick's guide on mencoder, but my mkv file had subtitles but when i used mencoder to convert to avi, the subs werent there, so now, how do i get the subs from the mkv file? the subs are in the mkv file already, i dont have the sub or srt file. any suggestions is appreciated

You can demux subs with mplayer/mencoder, but I can't remember the command line and I am not sure it would work if you happened to have VOBSubs.
Better to use mkvextract.
