There are people on both sides of the table. Lightscribe media seems to be at least 2x the price of other quality media (CD or DVD) and is only offered by Verbatim. The drives, at this point, take 30 minutes to complete a Lightscribe label and the result is in sepia monochrome. Only sepia (copper/brown) colored discs are available at this time.
If it's offered on a drive you are considering, it can't hurt. I think a lot of people (including myself) are bothered by the price of media, lack of media choice, and time it takes to complete the label.
Good luck,

the price of lightscribe media is costly and takes 30 mins to complete the label as already mentioned. get a BENQ 1640 drive which is the best dvd burner on the market at this time. check the BENQ FORUMS at CDFREAKS.COM.
HP has lightscribe dvd burners which are REBADGED BENQ 1625 drives. the 1640 burns both DVD-/+ R media well. BENQ has frequent firmware upgrades for their drives not like other manufacturers who lag in providing them. BENQ has frequent firmware upgrades to provide compatibility with the newer dvd media that is released. they also provide QSUITE 2.0 which is a software you can use to tweak your burn settings when using different dvd media. 1640 is under $40 from newegg.com! -
It depends.
Is writing on the disc a problem for you?
Do you want to produce "eye-catching" discs for your customers?
Do you want to have bragging rights?
Do you want to spend more time on burning?
Do you want to spend more cash on media?

If you answered YES to three or more of the above, a lightscribe burner is for you. I got one only because it was cheaper than all the rest on the shelf at a local store. I picked up a three pack of lightscribe discs too. I don't know if I'll ever use the lightscribe again, but that's just because of my preference to writing on discs with sharpies, not price of media or burn time required.
