  1. I capture my DV to PC with DVIO (no dropped frames). I convert the avi to mpg using TMPGEnc and its DVD-NTSC template. When playing back the mpg with PowerDVD, there are spots where the video portion momentarily freezes; audio continues on fine. Video then starts up again, still in sync.
Is the problem too high a bitrate? Too low? Something else? How do I find out? Thanks in advance.

Coulb too high a bit rate. Does it alway act up at exactly the same spot in the video. If it does, it's the MPG. You should cahnge the bit rate to a lower setting like 6000. You did not say what it was. if it is ramdom. it is your PC. Try another type of SW player if it is on PC side.

By the way, noone is going to even come close to helping unless you give complete techniqua detail on just haw the DV was converted to MPG. There are some really super briight members in this forum that can help once they get the COMPLETE story. I'm not even close to their level.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

  3. Always the same spot. Thanks. I will try a lower bit rate.

  4. If I had some idea of what bitrate was used to encode the video, I might have a way to determine if it was too high.

Also, that might make this exchange useful to someone else with a similar problem.

However, I personally believe the problem lies in the need for a re-calibration of your Johnson framistats.

I have experienced the same problem for at least a couple of years.
The first time I ever noticed it was on a conversion from DVD to VCD(Frida)where the pause in video happens several times through the movie but never loses audio sync.
I too use Tmpgenc and Tmpgenc express to convert from avi to VCD/DVD, and then use Nero to burn, I had always felt it was Nero causing the problem, but since you make no mention of burning your mpeg only viewing it, could it possibly be a bug in Tmpgenc or a flaw the templates used?
Just shut up and listen dumbass
