I have been successful in making VCD's following the advice on this site, using Smartripper - DVD2AVI - TMPEGenc.
I would now like to try my hand at SVCD's.
I have followed the guide for making SVCD's but have a couple of questions.
On Bitrate calc, "enter length of video clip" Does this refer to the length of the complete film or the length of half of the film. If it does refer the length of the "half" how would I find this out, or is it film length divided by 2?
I have downloaded VCDhelp's bitrate calculator. How do I get it to work.
    Thanks

  6. Hey there,

the bitrate calculator is not only for DVDs! To use it you can open your movie file with TMPGenc. Click configure, go to the advanced tab and double click on source range. This brings up a window with your movie above and a slider below. By clicking "jump to end" or moving the slider to the end of the film you will see the total time listed at top. If you are planning on putting the movie on two CDs (common for VCD and SVCD)calculate half the movie length from that total and then move the slider to the point. Move around there a litte until you find a good place to break the film, click "mark end" and then right down the time at top. You've just selected the first half of your encode (first CD) and you can enter that time in the bitrate calculator. When you have encoded the first half, you do the second in the same way. Move the slider to the break point and choose "mark start", then move all the way to the end and click "mark end". You can use this to also avoid credits and such if you want. Oh, the time given for the 2nd CD will be wrong by the length of the first. Subtract the first from the second.
