  1. Okay,

I have had lots of time in the last few weeks to mess around, and I am getting pretty good results capturing real-time to MPG-2 files. Finally figured out how to cap to 480x480. Now, when I use the SVCD bitrate of 2.4 to cap, I get pretty blocky "high action" scenes. I am currently using CBR, because when I use VBR in DVD Movie Factory, it won't let me burn it, because it's not a valid SVCD format. Like everyone else here, I want to skip the resolution step...

    Thanks,
    Thom

  2. Try MMC 7.5 -- it's a bit more advanced.

I'm working on a tool for it - you can just set 480x480 in the software now - and with a few tweaks I'm sure someone is going to figure out the perfect setting for SVCD (without re-multiplexing)

MMC 7.5 has some STRANGE settings you can 'toy' with - such as 'Rtinterval' and 'Res' -- I can't tell you what they do yet but I give you easy access to them in my tool - heck if you find out what they do tell me so I can add a better explanation and maybe a SVCD 'pre-set' button!

you can get the latest beta at http://64.80.22.253/stinky/

the tool is only for MMC 7.5 ... there were too many differences in the registry for me to make it backward compatible

  3. Thanks a lot for the reply. I uninstalled 7.1, put 7.5 on, and it does indeed create Ulead compatible SVCD files. Very nice. I am going to experiment with the registry (and your tool) this weekend. So far though, everyone is right. This is a major upgrade in the right direction. During capture at best MPEG settings it only uses 45% of my CPU time. Impressive.

Best part (in my opinion) is the automatic "spill" system Finally, I can put virtual-dub away!

    Cheers,
    Tjd

COOL! glad to help - and get the first confirmation that the SVCD's are 'compliant'!! .. Let me know if you figure out any tricks or 'perfect settings' and I'll add them to the tool. I thinking of adding a 'pre-set' menu for VCD, SVCD and so on.

"Best part (in my opinion) is the automatic "spill" system"

    What does that mean?

RU talking about the ability to span capture files?
If so, I haven't been able to get it to work.

  6. Yep - That's what I am talking about. In the settings - Digital VCR, with the custom profile, I set it to VCD sized files. It automatically split up the file for me. I finally prefer the MMC software over the other great freeware tools out there.

  7. I tried to make it even easier by breaking it up by CD-R type. And allowing you to use custom / unsupported sizes.

  10. Well, unfortunately after upgrading to XP, my ATI MMC 7.5 is crashing my system, so i am going to have to work on that this weekend, instead of being able to play with Video

Anyone else have 7.5 crashing under XP? Worked fine in 2000 (my previous config).

I have tried 480x480 MPEG2 captures with MMC7.5 at 2500kb/s VBR, IBP frames but the result is absolute crap. Extremely blocky even in non-motion scenes, and by extremely blocky I mean you can't make out any detail AT ALL. It looks like one of those pixellating filters has been applied to hide the faces like you sometimes see on News shows.

Now I admit my CPU is not the best (600 Mhz Cel) but I am not getting any dropped frames, just a useless file. Even at 4000kb/s, I would consider the resulting file unusable. Does anyone else have this problem and can anyone tell me what I may be doing wrong?

  12. ngnr: what is your CPU Load set to? the templates in MMC have a very low "motion estimation"

set up the profile - get my tool - set your CPU Load to 1.0 and try again

it seems that your CPU Load is set at zero which gives off those aweful blocks

or ask tjdmobile for a reply - he seems to have figured it out I haven't done SVCD too much yet

Actually, I got your tool! I thought the CPU setting was already 1.0 but I guess I'll have to verify. I'll also check the motion estimation again. Thanks!

  14. Yes, I have gotten SVCD working VERY well. True black, no Obvious blocks. You can't remove them all, and stay in compliance with SVCD, but change your CPU (as Stinky indicated), and change the Horizontal and vertical predict (I think that's what it's call, there are drop down lists on the bottom of the panel, as I am away from my PC). I set them to the maximum (like 256 and 12. Bitrate MUST be below 2.45 to work properly in my system. I create, burn, put in DVD player and Voila! I have very acceptable SVCD for all to enjoy.

    Hope this helps,
    Tjd
