My Digital 8 camera is going bad. I would like to upgrade to a different format, but I have a pile of 8 and digital 8 tapes I don't want to loose access to. Is there such a thing as a digital 8 "player" that is cheaper than a new full camera, or am I stuck in that format until I can afford two new cameras?
If a full camera is my only option and I were wanting a one as a player only, not caring about it's recording functions, which should I purchase?

Here's one by sony but it looks pretty pricey - a new camera may be a better option:

I've been using the Sony GDV200 for about 3 years now. It's really a great little recorder, although a bit pricey. Actually, I paid less than the current selling price. In addition to playing old 8/Hi8 tapes, I also use it for archiving my mini-DV tapes and all of my DV projects. Works well.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea that existed. Unfortunately, the 200 is a bit pricey since I can pick-up a camcorder for something in the $300 range. Is there any reason to go with the more expensive player rather than a TRV280 or TVR480? I see the 200 has editing features but for playback-only, would it be any better?

You could find a used Digital8 camcorder for under $200 on Ebay or Craigslist. If you don't care about the camera section, the featues to watch for are:
- Ability to play LP mode (I recommend you don't use LP mode)
- Ability to play analog 8mm and Hi8 tapes
- Analog Pass-Through feature
Newer low end Digita8 camcorders may lack the last two features. Older models may lack LP mode.
The players usually duplicate the camcorder modes. Usually the only advantage is faster tape shuttle.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

I have Sony DCRTRV-120, and it does DV-> Analog and Analog->DV, the 130 and newer wont do it. Also theres not Macro filter in the camera so you can dub VHS too if you feel the need.
HTH,
AndrewI have been into computers since 1980. Ive been tinkering with DV in one flavor or another since 1990. -
I would just buy either the 280 or 480. You can find the later for less than $300 online new and you can use it for analog to digital pass-thru. The 280 will work if you only need to transfer digital8 tapes, and it's cheaper.

I'd just go ahead and buy a new digital camera. You can always rent a digital8 camera for $50, capture your tapes, then spit them back out into your new digital camera.
