  1. Can anyone tell me if there is a site that Reviews all DVD Recorders specifications to what the recorder can do.

what i'm very most intrested in is, which dvd recorder produces the the best picture and sound quality, when recording at 6 hours and 8 hours.

    Thanks to all that reply

None. They will all look like garbage.

Never use a DVD recorder for more than 3-4 hours on the good machines (Pioneer, JVC, LiteOn).

On some lower grade machines, no more than 2 hours (Panasonic, Philips, Cyberhome, etc).

    DVDs are not like VHS.
VHS 6-hour mode was not bad, not like this. DVD 6-hour is junk, unwatchable.

  4. DVD recorders with a hard drive of 80 GB can record 17 hours in XP mode which could be broken into titles and recorded to 4.7 GB disks at less than XP rates.

For the best quality for 6-8 hours on one disk, any of these new Pioneers can record to a dvd-r, dual layer disk with 8.5 GB. It may look like LP mode but better than possible with a single layer disk. There is a rumor that some new Sony recorders available only in Europe may support dvd+r, dual layer.

Yes, very true. DL recorders using DL media (double the size of SL media) can do double the max 3-4 hours (6-8 hours).

LG and Pioneer are the only ones with DL right now.
Either of those units would be fine.

The only question then is: Is it worth spending $5-$10 a disk for DL disks? Only the user can answer that.

  7. How much is a blank dvd in your country? Considering the price of a blank dvd why would anybody even think of putting 6 or 8 hours on a single dvd and get a lousy result when you play the disc. 2 hours is max for me and I pay .4 euro for a disc.

Blank single-layer DVDs are cheap. Less than US $1.00 a disk. Double/Dual layer ones are $5-$10 a disk, which begs the question of value for a 6-hour recording on a DL disk.

I don't want to get into a flame war about this. but although I may have exaggerated a bit on the low end of the spectrum, now you're exaggerating in the opposite direction on the low end. I looked at the two sites you mentioned, supermediastore and shop4tech. The cheapest DL disks at supermediastore were $3.60 each and at shop4tech they were $3.79. Around here there are many brick-and-mortar retail stores that sell DL disks for $29.99 for a 3-pack. Staples is one that I know of. So the $10 a disk is not an exaggeration.

My whole point in all of this was not to give precise price quotes for DL disks, but that whatever the price of DL disks, $2.00 or $10.00 or whatever, at best they are 3 or 4 or more times as expensive as single-layer disks, and you have to ask yourself if it's worth it to put 6 hours of video on one DL disk. I can't say if it is or isn't. Only the user can make that judgement.

What kind of crappy DL media are you getting for that price? RITEK?
Even those are still $3-4 each on sale, $5-7 off sale.

The MKM stuff is still in the $4-5 range, $7-10 off sale.

I only buy from those stores when I get discounted emails from them and free shipping. I have not used any DL medea yet. I have burned and duplicated this year... over 3000 DVD's with Ritek GO4 and GO5 as my prime disks and am 100% satisfied. Maybe DL will not be so good but I have NO plans to ever use DL at the moment because of compatability issues. But I regularly see adds with my discount for like... $11.99 or $12.95 for 5 DL disks. Quality I can not say. But that price is out there and will come down some more I bet.

    Happy burning,
    Glenn

That's why I bought a Pioneer 531 model DVD recorder ... it has a built-in 80GB HDD and it also can burn to a Dual Layer DVD-R disc but with the HDD I really don't need the DL DVD-R ability.

I just checked SuperMediaStore.com and the Verbatim DL DVD-R discs are $17.99 for a 3 pack which is $6.00 each and the shipping is not free.

Too expensive if you ask me.

When I first got into DVD burning a quality disc like Maxel or Fuji (both MADE IN JAPAN) was $3.49 each (plus tax) in packs of 10. Damn I thought THAT was expensive the hell I'm paying $6.00 for DL media.
