As you can see there are plenty of alternatives and no TMPGEnc is not the best. It is however decent and real easy to use.

Click on 'Tools' to the left. Then click on the "Authoring (DVD)" link. You'll get a list of 40-50 author programs. "Best" depends on what features you want. TMPGEnc is the best for me (in it's price range).

All things being equal, No .... but depending on what you want to do, it may be.

No I haven't, but in anticipation, I'm fairly certain you wouldn't have a hope in hell of replicating that in TDA. DVD-lab is much much more customisable.
    If in doubt, Google it.

So far I'd say the "best" are Sony DVD Architect (as much as I hate to endorse a Sony product) and Mediachance DVD Lab Studio or Pro (though it's documentation is terrible) but I don't think there are any yet that are really great.

I don't know if this makes any difference, but presumably by the end of September, TDA is coming out with a new version called PRO. It's supposed to have a more "robust" menu creation function.

the best menus are not made in the authoring program but in photoshop , cgi applications and video applications ..

dblue, I am a TMPGenc DVD Author user who has also tried DVD Lab (Pro). It is much harder to use. You can do lot more things with it but if there is just one mistake in the menu the disc will often lock up. With TDA I am 90% sure the disc will at least play.

Before anyone mentions it yes I have read the DVD Lab online user guides till I'm blue in the face but so far have made little progress.

TDA is a great program. Don't worry what others say or think. There's nothing wrong with training wheels. This site is proof of that. You have to learn to crawl before you can get up and run. Like most things, you'll progress and realize the shortcomings and limitations of just about every application after you've used it long enough.

Spruce Up is another great authoring program for beginners, if you can still find it anywhere.

I'll second that, DVD Workshop will give you all the options you could possibly want, there's not much it can't do. It's also very easy to use. But as BJ_M mentioned you need to create the sources then import into Workshop for a really good menu.
