  1. I failed to follow my normal procedure and allowed Software Update to install Quicktime 7.02. [normally I download package and install, so I can keep the installer]. After rebooting the Finder would launch and then quit — endlessly. I couldn't launch any other app either....

So I was forced to reinstall Tiger, and then update again to 10.4.2, plus all the security updates, Safari update, etc.

All is well except for DVD Player, which quits upon launch. I have an installer for the DVD Player 4.6.1 update, but when I try to use it, it tells me a newer version is already installed. I tried trashing all frameworks and files connected to the DVD Player and then reinsalled the new version...did no good. The date of the 10.4.1 update is newer than the DVD Player 4.6.1 update, but using Pacafist I found only a private framework (which when installed didn't help either.

Can anybody sugget a method to get DVD Player back? Do I need to reinstall Tiger again?

And you did try deleting the pkg files labeled:

    DVDPlayerUpdate_2005_06.pkg
    DVDPlayerUpdate.pkg

    from /Library/Reciepts
and it still would not let you update DVD Player?

If not, trash those files, and try running either
the Software Update installer, or try direct download
    from Apple and then install.

  3. Removing the two items still woldn't allow the updaate to run. The only thing that will enable the update to run is if I go to System>Library>Frameworks and remove the DVDPlayback. famework. If I put it in the Trash, I can install the update again. But that doesn't return DVDPlayer to functioning again. Not even after a restart (the item in the Trash can't be deleated since it is "inuse")

I took your advice and hunted on the Apple web site and found an installer for DVDPlayer 4.6 itself. After installing it, all is well. I didn't need to install the 4.6.1 framework again, since I already had it. But I was obviously missing some componant that prevented launching.

By the way, one downloaded both of these updaters are simply called DVDPlayer update.
