Eveytime I try to convert a video stream to Xvid my computer freezes during the operation, no error messages just a hard lock requiring a manual restart.

I dont know where to start with troubleshooting this problem, im not sure if it is software or hardware. I have clean reinstalled video and chipset drivers and changed AGP aperature setting from 64MB to 128MB.

    virtualdub 1.6.10?
    xvid 1.0.3?

does it freeze at the same spot when you convert? or random or directly when you start convert?
    tried different video sources?

    VirtualDub 1.6 and XVid 1.03

It happens randomly, never at the same frame.
Most sources cause this to happen, it made it through to the end once with a source that was the first part of a complete source where the second part froze.

I have another computer with the same software setup, k-lite codec pack etc. except its more powerful and I have no problems at all.

I am basically troubleshooting my second PC which I want to use for this type of thing to free up the main computer.

I got this error message after leaving in hard lock for some time:
    Crash reason: Access Violation

    Crash context:
An out-of-bounds memory access (access violation) occurred at 024dd101...

...while compressing frame 5725 from 03ff0020 to 02520020 using codec "XviD MPEG-4 Codec" (VideoSequenceCompressor.cpp:618)...

    ...while running thread "Processing" (thread.cpp:150).

I am having a very similar problem. I'm also using virutaldub 1.6.10 and have tried to cut four different avi's and every single time virtualdub freezes my computer to where I have to hit the reset button. The files are all captures from vhs through minidv cam.

My lockups also occurs randomly, but it happens with every attempt to try and cut an avi file down. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A likely cause may be faulty RAM modules. Try substituting a different module and see if that helps. This is a common cause of random crashes. Substituting is the sure way to tell.

This is especially true if other encoding programs have the same effect. Xvid is very memory and processor intensive. It can quickly show the defects in the system.

Well, I've been using virtualdub to seperate audio and video streams just fine. I've also been encoding with cce without any problems and authoring with dvd-lab without any problems at all. It is just when I try to cut the avi files in virtualdub that it freezes.

If I had some other RAM I'd swap it out to test it, but I don't have any other sticks.

chanchan, your problem sounds different. CCE usually shows up memory problems also. Random crashes are hard to figure out. Memory problems are often the cause when it's random. You might try an earlier version of VD. I generally use VD Mod, so I have only tried VD 1.6 a few times.

    Some additional things to try:

Install the latest FFdshow (decodes so many things, and so well)

Try a different (newer/older) driver for your video card.

Try a different video resolution, or try 16/24/32 bit resolution.

I ran a test on my memory using memtest86+ and it returned no errors so I think I can definitely count that out.

I've tried using VDM, but whenever I load the dv-avi files I get the following messages:

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd' (unknown). VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this video.

AVI: Type-1 DV file detected -- VirtualDub cannot extract audio from this type of interleaved stream."

I've tried editing some anime avi's I had (ranging in size from 150-700MB) and they worked fine. Just when I load in the dv-avi files (ranging in size from 6-10GB) they freeze everything. Would it be safe to assume it is strictly the dv-avi format that is causing my problem? Is there some kind of dv codec I should have?
