I've just about got to be able to capture TV (Intervideo Home Theatre - awful program with zero help!). It writes to my HD as mpeg.
I then do a little light editing using WinDVDCreator (these progs all came on my newish HP Pavilion, BTW) and burn to disc.
Problem is that the sound on the DVD ends up about half a second out from the picture. Is there any way to correct or fix this, please?

Start by using something better to edit the stream. mpeg is not designed to be edited - it is a playback compression algorythm first and foremost. However, because companies keep producing mepg based recording devices for consumer use, there is now a need to edit mpeg footage, for better or for worse. Unfortunately, because of the nature of temporal compression, good mpeg editors are few and far between, while average to down-right crappy ones are given away free in every box of breakfast cereal.
There are a few that seem to have pretty good reputations here and seem to produce results with less issues than most. VideoRedu and Mpeg-VCR would be two of the better ones, along with cuttermaran and mpg2cut2. I'd start there.Read my blog here.

Dropped frames is to blame.

Thanks for the replies. I should have posted in the Newbie forum, I think. The whole thing is too complicated when all you want to do is record and playback! (Anyone mention VHS??)

Use a Canopus capture device ... and you may NEVER have desync problems again!!!

OKAY. I downloaded VideoReDo and it certainly makes finding and cutting a whole lot easier than what I have been using.
Now - I need to burn the resulting files! Do I just copy the .vob files onto a DVD if I output to those? Or use the mpeg file?
My DVD player is a JVC which allegedly plays -R and -RW but I can't get any play although the DVD will run on my Pavilion.
And to think I sold my 8mm years ago!Datastream -
You need to author them into DVD format. I myself use TMPGEnc DVD Author package to author and Nero to burn. You can not just copy them to the disk and have them play as a DVD.

I am thoroughly confused: having used VideoReDo (which IS very user-friendly for editing!) I end up with a .vob file on my HD, whatever that is. If I double-click on that, it plays in several different programs. And if I just copy it onto a DVD- it plays, but with jerks and audio dropouts......

The problem is beacuse it hasn't been authored.
Download the trial version of TMPGEnc DVD Author program it is easy to use. You will have to chooose show all files to see the VOB file but it should work or just run the VOB file through VideoReDo and select to output as a mpg file. Author the DVD, this process created the proper file structure. Then burn the authored files to disk. DVD Author has a burning tool. I've never used it I'm afraid since I use Nero to burn but it should work.
Total cost to try = Some time to download and learn to use Plus a disk. Should be a total cost in money of 30 to 50 cents.
Try these guides from a quick search here in the how to, all guides section.

In short Authoring makes it into a "Standard" DVD for DVD players.
Sort of like you can have all the ingerdiants for bread, but until mixed in the proper proportions in the proper order and baked it isn't bread.
Actually Authoring is easy to do if you use a easy program like I suggested above. Just follow the tutorial. It should take 1 or 2 minutes to make a simple DVD and 15 minutes or so to become ready to burn.

OK! I have at last managed to get a viewable DVD. Part of the problem was the fact that my JVC player only reads -R/RW and I just found an addendum slip in my comfuser paperwork saying that the bundled Intervideo programs won't do minus!
What I have done was to capture TV using Intervideo Home Theatre (What a lousy program, BTW!) as mpg before editing with VideoReDo and resaving as mpeg.
Then I loaded that into WINDVDCreator and "burned" to the hard disc. I ended up with two folders, "Audio" (empty??) and "Video". The latter contained half a dozen files, .ifo, .vob etc.
I then just copied those files onto a blank DVD-RW using Sonic RecordNow.
The thing seems to play from my DVD drive on the comfuser - I will have t wait until my JVC is back from the repairer to see if that works too! (Third visit in 10 months....)
Thanks chaps.Datastream -
Well WinDVDCreator will author a DVD. Doesn't it burn to a DVD too?
Anyway the AUDIO_TS is generally empty but should be there for compatability. The VIDEO_TS is where DVD Video lies. those various files are what tewll the DVD recorder how to play, what to play, chapters etc. the .ifo, the .vob hold the menus and chapter thumbnails and the Movie itself. the .bup are needed and are backups of the .ifo as I understand it. You might try TMPGEnc DVD author program as it has a trial period, tutorials here and can burn the DVD for you in the proper mode. Just copying the 2 directories to a -rw may or may not work. I've never tried it or used Sonic Recordnow either. Why not take yor disk to someone like estbuy/Circuit City, etc. and try it out in their players. Sometimes the cheapies work best for slightly off disks and are pretty cheap.
Good Luck, it sounds like you are getting there.

Yes,the girl at VideoEasy said that they have more trouble with rentals not working in the big expensive DVDs than the cheapos. Can't think why; you would think that the more expensive ones would have better error correction, would you not?
Anyway, I am going to "do" few -RWs and -Rs and see if the "repaired" JVC will play them! If and when it *IS* repaired.....Datastream -
Well the big brand names are more likely to require the DVD adhere to standards as I understand it and the cheapo machines will play more types generally such as VCD/SVCD & DVD.
My sony changer wants vcd or dvd only and they need to be NTSC region 1. My cheapo Apex changer plays VDCD/SVCD/DVD & MPGs. It would play region 1 NTSC & PAL or region free disks in either format out of the box and output as viewable NTSC. With a Hack It now does both formats and is region free so I can now watch most and DVD on it, but I still prefer the Sony as It holds more disks and is better for things like episodic DVDs where they may be on several DVDs. I can load all the DVDs at one time and then watch an episode of one show go to another disk and watch an episode of a different show and then watch a movie if the mood strike me all without going and changing disks.
Cheers
