  1. I've got a mkv file and the video is mp4v. how do i extract the files and convert it to avi? I've tried mkvextractor but it can only extract the audio and subtitle file.
how do I go about all this?

Sounds like it has native MPEG-4. Can mkvextract not extract the video to a m4v file? ffmpeg should then I believe be able to mux it to avi.

  4. Native MPEG4 MKV could only be demuxed to MP4 container, but i fear this is not supported by mkvextract yet :/

The only thing worth trying is maybe a DirectShow grpah with 3ivX MP4 muxer filter (if there is one) connected to MKV parser ?

Native AVC is extracted to raw AVC though, no? So one would assume that native MPEG4 would be extracted to a raw m4v stream, although I guess not yet?

What about mplayer to dump the video stream?
