ok I would like some opinions please. Forgetting the price, which model would be better to get? I want to transfer some old VHS home movies to dvd plus receord some of my favorite tv shows. Pioneer 633H is newer model than the 57H, would that make a dfference? Is the mechanics on the 633H better? Thanks to all.

  2. YES, the 633 is superior to last year's 57H. They improved the MPEG encoder, made the video input adjustments more broad, added a new video input gamma adjustment, added dual layer DVD-R burning capability, and (best of all) added a super high quality XP+ (15 Mbps) hard drive recording mode with quasi two-pass re-encoding to a lower compliant bitrate setting of your choice to DVD.

    gshelley,

Quuick question. Can the 633, when recording is in XP+ mode, be burned from hard drive to DVD-RW in VRO mode without reencoding? Lets say get 40 minutes of XP+ recording on a DVD-RW?

I ask because I am interested in this, so that I can take the video on DVD-RW to my computer and do some of the clean-up/filtering work myself using additional software. Thanks.

    I don't think so. Haven't tried it, though... I've only done DVD-Video re-encodes. I'll give it a try tonight.

You probably would be better off doing software filtering in AVI format.

No. XP+ is HDD only. It exceeds the video DVD spec.

True, but I have found that DVD recorders give me a leg up and shorten the time from recording the VHS tape to final DVD (using the JVC MH30s). The input filtering on that unit is great. What that does is allow me to use less filtering calls on my filtering process and therefore less encoding time. *.AVI is great, but involves more work and time.

Frobozz, are you just taking an educated guess or know for sure, either by trial or something in the manual?

I ask this because, VRO mode is not a standard that DVD players can read other than the one that it was recorded on. So, with that, maybe the unit will allow an XP+ burn of lets say 30 minutes onto a DVd-RW. Maybe I'm reaching, but its worth a dabble.

If one of you guys can do a short test cap in XP+ mode and attempt a DVD-RW burn in VRO mode, I would appreciate it.

    Curiosity question.

has anyone tried to run firewire into their Pioneer or any other recorders from an HDTV receiver that has firewire out? Successful reception & capture? Thanks.
