  1. No offense to anyone who makes software, but I'm just damn tired of spending three or four days trying to convert a DIVX or XVID file to VCD or DVD, so the solution is to buy me a player that can handle those formats! My main DVD player is my SONY, and it works extemely well, but can't handle anything but basic DVD and VCD in NTSC. My secondary is a cheapo APEX, which handles SVCD and DVD in PAL/NTSC, but oddly enough, can't handle a basic VCD. I paid verrrry little for it, so seeing it go won't kill me, but what to get for the replacement that can handle those pesky Divx files? It's also got to be able to handle PAL as I've converted a number of foreign DVD's I've bought.
I'd like to keep it in the hundred dollar or so range.
    Any suggestions?

  3. In the lists menu on the left hand side of this site you'll see a DVD Players section. Click on it and click on the features you need (DivX, PAL/NTSC etc.) and do a search by rating.

  4. Phillips DVP642 in North America
    Phillips DVP630? Europe
It plays pretty much everything I try in it. DVD, DVD r+or-, SVCD, VCD. CVD . DivX, Xvid & mpg burned as data . Pal or NTSC &easy simple hack for region free & the early firmware is microvision free! About the only thing it doesn't play is Xvid .ogm version (which I've only seen one of) and WMV/.asf though some have said they sometimes work. I paid $69.00 for mine locally and others have gotten a bit cheaper. Many places even Walmart & Target have had them. Quality seems great to me & not a single disk I've burned on my Mac hasn't played so far! Even the new DivX 6 plays but no menues show ( maybe fixed in the future with a new firmware)

  5. Quick question: I'm heading out today to find and try a few of these players (salesmen hate me, but I get to check them before I buy) is there any special way to burn them to CD? I was just going to put a few smaller DIVX and XVID files onto a CD and burn using PC settings on Toast.
So far from reviews, the PHillips DVP642 and the Norcent DP 220 seem to be the best overall bet.

  7. Using Toast 6.03 in Mac OSX I burn using the Mac & PC Data setting(for DivX, Xvid or mpeg without converting for SVCD etc ). This let you use the long file names rather then the 11 digits that PC ISO give you and it then will play on either Mac or PC or DVD /DivX stand alone player. Best of luck i love my Phillips DVP 642

  8. Thanks for the advice, I went with the Phillips, and it plays everything I want, and seems solidly built. The Norcent played everything as well, but just seemed a little flimsy.
