  1. Hi all. I've just been browsing around the forums and figured this is a good place to get help.

Basically, I've come to the decision to sell my PS3, and as a replacement I want a DVD player that can play WMV and AVI files through USB input. From my brief research, I saw the name Philips DVP5992 a lot, but I realise that this model is about 2 years old at this point, so figured something better might be around.

I'm looking to spend no more than £60 in reality. As long as it plays DVDs and will carry these two video types, I'll be happy. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

No matter what is recommended, we can't give you a guarantee that 100% of your files will play. For example, here is a sticky that lists AVI encoding options that can cause playback problems on DVD players.

You might want to take a look at your AVI files and see if they tend to have any of those options in them prior to buying anything.

WMV support is quite rare. In general you're really better off to get a media player such as one of the Western Digital models or something similar if playback via USB is really important to you. It could be that all your files are standard definition and have nothing unusual about them and will play back fine. Then again for I know you could have a lot of stuff at high def resolutions and if so you'll find it next to impossible to find any DVD player that supports that. Note that media players should support high def resolutions and are a lot more tolerant of the encoding options in the link above than DVD players are.

  3. I have looked at media playback devices, but obviously the fact that they don't play DVDs is a drawback. I guess I could go for a cheapish DVD player as well, though.
