What is macrovision? I understand it to be an encoded way of recording so materials can't be dubbed. AM I correct? If so, how can I overcome this?

...for analog video signals, yes. Defeated with "Video Stabilizers".

    Macrovision
An analog video copy protection scheme that alters the unseen part of a video signal such that a VCR or other macrovision enabled device may not record the video signal properly. There are several types:
    - Automatic Gain Control
    - 2-line color stripe
    - 4-line color stripe

Symptoms of this include picture fading in and out or color banding of the signal.

This is why we have a glossary (to your left)
    If in doubt, Google it.

One thing that isn't mentioned there, and a lot of NOOBIES get confused with, is that Macrovision is applied to the sync portion of the signal (non-picture part) and is an ANALOG only method.

It is recorded that way onto a VHS tape at the dub plants (whose record decks have been modified to pass it through), and plays back through the video path so that a consumer's dubbing deck will balk at it. BUT...

DVDs are digital. The don't have Macrovision encoded--just a flag may be added that tells the player to add Macrovison encoding on the ANALOG video outputs.
