I recently bought a brand new HR-S9911U SVHS for capturing my VHS tapes. I have had it about a month and last night when I went to capture a tape, all I got was static and the VCR said that the heads needed cleaning. I could hear the audio. I did use the head cleaner (ran it through twice) but nothing changed. I haven't really used the VCR very heavily, probably about 6-8 times since I hooked it up. It is still covered under warranty and I will be taking it in for service, but if this is a quick fix because I am missing something maybe someone here can suggest some things to try.

    Thanks!

  2. If all you got was static, it sounds like more than dirty tape heads (which would cause streaks, graininess, etc. but usually not a total loss of the picture)

Better get it to an authorized JVC service center ASAP for warranty repair...

These units seemingly get damaged easily when mishandled by UPS or the shipper. This is about the 3rd time I've heard of issue with 9911 units that were brand new, but in each case it sounds like a cleaning or aligment would fix it right up. Shipping companies treat packages like they're trash, so this can happen on something that has lots of delicate moving parts (like a VCR).

I just thought that it was strange that it had been working great for the last few weeks and then all of a sudden it died.

I spoke to one shop that services JVCs and they said that it was probably a severely dirty tape that crapped up the heads and to just keep running the head cleaner through. A second shop told me to just bring it in.

I finally heard from the shop. It appears that one of the heads is bad and needs to be replaced. That seems so hard to believe considering that the unit is only 1.5 months old and has only been used to play 8-10 tapes.
