I've recently bought a Liteon 1673 usb burner (upgraded to the latest firmware from cdfreaks). I've been having weird problems with burning dvds (burning cds works fine). It burns a fine dvd on an old Sony dvd-rw I have for testing, but won't burn on Yuden dvd plus r discs that are supposed to be supported (they're in my media list). In fact, once I've burned them, the drive won't even recognize that they exist. I've tried burning with Nero, DVD Decryptor, and Burnatonce and get the same results. I did get it to burn about 500 mgs of data (mp3s) onto one of these dvds and that worked (at least it recognized the disc and I could see the data).

So, I guess what I'm wondering is...just because the media is in the supported list, will it only support burning it in certain ways? Like maybe it's screwing it up after a certain amount of data is on the disc, or the way it's finalized?

I know these are weird questions, I'm just not sure how to troubleshoot this drive, especially when I can't look at the disc after it's done.

I am going to get some other media and test it out, but would appreciate some feedback on this.

  2. My bad experience with a Lite On DVD drive is that it became very unstable when I installed XP's Service Pack 2.

Bad burns nearly all the time, with previously reliable media. My view now is that Lite On make very good CD burners, but not so good DVD burners.

Well, I haven't done anything crazy like that, I've done a bit of un-installing though. I never had any problems like this with my old Sony...too bad it finally died. I never even knew there were media compatibility problems when I had that.

Well, it seems to like Verbatim dvd plus r (really MCC004). That's it so far. It'll take Verbatim dvd-r, but it only burns halfway through the disc (although I get no errors). No Sony, Ritek, or Yuden, even though these are supported according to the media list in my firmware. I'd appreciate any feedback.

I registered there but haven't gotten an email back with the activation info yet...does it take a while? I think that was Sunday.

    And yes, it's only USB.
