    Ok, so what decoder is being used. With default settings a VfW decoder would be used and if you have XviD installed for an XviD encoded file that would always be XviD. With dshow it could be any number of decoders.

    .avi means squat
    avi is just a container.
    Use GSpot latest beta version and get some proper information about your file first.
    Once you know exactly what video codec & what audio codecs (or formats) are used in this "avi" then you'll know where the problem lies - either missing or different codec version, or something wrong with your codec or encoder settings...

    I don't know why it's crashing, but you might try opening the AVI in virtualdub, go to Video > Direct Stream Copy, go to Audio > Direct Stream Copy, then go to File > Save as AVI. Basically what we're doing here is creating a new AVI, but copying the audio and video components (leaving them untouched), but rewriting the headers in the file.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    What up with that?

    If you were to render it we could see what dshow filters were being used. Should be the someones that are used in TMPGEnc.

    Tpmgenc is a great program but its also slow as mollassis. Instead i would use Tpmgenc 3.0 Xpress or Mainconcept Mpeg Encoder v1.4.. Mainconcept gives slighty less better results than Tpmgenc xpress but where it takes 5 hours ..Mainconcept can do it in 2 hours...Ive never had messed up files using either on of these products..Although one thing to note using the Tpmg xpress is that it seems to over estimate your final file size... And i mean buy gigs but other than that it works great

    perhaps there is something with your avi file's header not right?
    but this shouldn't prevent you from playing it or your encoder from accessing the file;
    my guess is you downloaded this file from someone/somewhere, and either it was sent to you broken, or it got f*cked up during the download.
    try opening it with VLC player (freebie), it is able to play basically anything no matter how broken it is.

    109,853/3665=29.9735 so most likely framerate is correct ~29.97
    (avi files - unlike MPEGs - they often have some abnormalities in the thousands of second, but it is normal - anything within 29.97x should be ok)

    and as previous poster suggested - reinstall your codec;
    keep in mind that there is constant 'fight' for the MPEG-4 format among your codecs on your system, and unless you manually set it correctly (in the options of each codec) they will try to 'steal' each other's 'formats', i.e. if you have installed codecs: divx5 and xvid, then xvid will always try to play divx5 as well; or opposite - if you've installed first xvid then divx5 last - then divx codec will try to play xvid's files; it happens because all these lame greedy coders always set their codecs to be default mpeg-4 codec for all mpeg-4 codecs, which is wrong;
    in other words: if you don't set them all manually after installation it is kind of pointless to install more than one mpeg-4 codec, because no matter how many of them you will install - only the last one installed will be set as active for all of them (if xvid was the last installed - it will be default for xvid-encoded mpeg-4s, *and* for divx-encoded mpeg-4s too; if divx codec was the last one you've installed it will be opposite; lame but true - and it may create problems with some files - maybe thats the case you have here).
    Try to get into options/configuration of all your mpeg-4 codecs (basically xvid and divx, but some versions of stinky quicktime also 'steal' mpeg-4 avi s) and set them to play only their own - divx to play only divx and xvid to play only xvids; IIRC its the "default for all mpeg-4" or "play all mpeg-4" or similar option in both
