I've got a bunch of mpeg 2 files on an external drive that I've been converting over to xvid to save a bit of space. These files come either from DVD (vob's merged) or from my former tivo.

I've been progressively converting the files to xvid / avi with AutoGK.

I play these files on a plasma tv via a linksys DMA 2200 media extender.

I've noticed that neither the "original" mpg file or the xvid / avi conversion will FF / REW at the media extender or on the PC.

I think I recall that in order to have a DVD capable of FF / REW, one must insert "chapter" marks into the video. Assuming the source video had chapters (esp those that originated from DVD), then why would FF/ REW functionality disappear just through merging VOB files?

Am I on the wrong track here? How do I ensure the xvid / avi I am creating incorporate FF / REW functionality?

As far as I know (someone will correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure ), Xvid AVIs don't quite have support for chapters. Your player/extender doesn't allow you to cue through the video?

mpg files resulting from DVD rip and then merged with vobmerge will not cue on the extender or on the PC (with WMP)

the converted xvid / avi behave the same way!

A DVD doesn't need chapters in order to FF or RW. Chapters just allow for faster navigation to specific points in the timeline.

You need two things to be able to FF/RW a video - a complete and correct index, and a player capable of observing and using that index.

It sounds like your extender can't FF/RW raw MPG files or Xvid/Divx encoded AVI files.
