  1. $50 mail in rebate deal. $179 plus tax, then minus the $50. The LVW-5006 is identical to the LVW-5005 except it has VCR+ and the specs show the audio encoding as two channel Dolby Digital (AC3) for DVD's.

There's a limit of 10 units per person. Shipping is free if you order online, or you can pick one up at your local Radio Shack.

  2. Now why would the Radio Shack version have "normal" audio compared to all the other models like the 5005, or the ilo?

It also has a three hour recording time unlike the 5005.

Between the ILO DVDR04 and the Liteon 5006, which one would you recommend?

With the rebate the price is almost the same.
The ILO is $118, the Liteon $129.

How is Radio Shack's return policy?

  5. I've never had problems returning anything to RS, and I've done it alot. The stuff they sell isn't very good most of the time.

  6. The LVW-5006 can record to DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and even CD-R/RW (for video and audio), so it is a better deal than the ILO.

RS has a 30 day return policy.

Perhaps the Radio Shack product buyers specified Dolby Digital for audio as a requirement since that is the North American DVD standard (along with LPCM). MP2 audio, though it normally will work fine in North American players, is not an official standard here.

What is the TV tuner like on this model? We have another Liteon and the tuner is horrible.

  9. We resell LVW-5006 and I have a unit at hand.

The audio recording capability is 2 channels, as there is only 2 channel input hardware. No digital audio in, only out.

The TV tuner is better than in LVW-5001 but it still sucks big time - and coming from a salesman this is bad. Attached to a digital tuner or a DV cam this is a good value for the money though. And it's much more reliable than the old LVW-5001.

I would assume just get a JVC for $200. I'm considering retiring my old 1st-run LiteOn 5001 because it just doesn't cooperate sometimes (the early units had issues). Probably get a JVC in it's place, same LSI chipset, but better implementation of it.

    I have the 5005

I took this out of your second link, is this what you meant by it recording in dolby digital?

    AUDIO RECORDING FORMAT
    Top of Page
    DVD+VR (HQ/SP/LP/EP/SLP): Dolby Digital 2-channel

b/c my ilo 04 and lvw-5005 manuals say the exact same thing, yet it records in mpeg. I would bet that one does too

FYI, the rebate says it'll take 10-12 weeks to fill. Three months, MAYBE you'll get your cash back.

  13. I just got my rebate check today for the 5006 I purchased from RS in early June

  14. I've received 2 rebates from RS about 30days after sending them in. No problems.
The only easier rebates are the Staples easy rebates, but they ARE slow, 2 to 6 months for the checks to arrive.
