Tried to burn and got burned in the process

First post for me.

Initially, I'd like to thank all who contribute here. You give free time and advice and I appreciate that. I hope to be able to contribute to the problem solving that goes on here some day.

Unfortunately, I come to you as a newbie with some information, but not enough to solve my problem.

I have an Khypermedia IDE 1008 8x DVD+RW DVD writer. I am running Windows XP Pro. Previously, I only burned audio cd's and loaded data cd info on my computer via the DVD drive , but I got the great idea to burn some DVD's. In the process, I installed Nero, DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink.

The next day, my DVD drive could no longer read CD's?

I tried changing the DVD from slave to master on my primary IDE, but I'm not sure if I did this correctly. What I did was change connections, connect the DVD where the hard drive (the previous master) was connected and vice-versa. Anyway, my computer wouldn't recognize either drive after that.

I uninstalled Nero, DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter and I did a system restore to a point before I installed these softwares.

Nontheless, My DVD drive still won't read CD's.

Also, until now I used this computer for audio purposes only. So, I don't have it hooked to the internet. I have wireless internet capabilities on my other computer, but I couldn't load the software anyway since I can't load info via CD's and I don't have another DVD burner. So, i couldn't do things like update the firmware or provide you with the error messages pertaining why my DVD drive wouldn't burn a new DVD in the first place.

All I really want to do at this point is have my DVD be able to read CD's.
Do you have any advice how to get this accomplished given the information I've provided?

Can your burner read DVD's? That would give us some additional information at least. I'm wondering if the ASPI drivers got squashed.

there has been talk about this on other boards as well as this one.. i have a liteon so i only really read those.. BUT ill bet money that your brand is just a re-badge of some other brand.. in any case.. its happened to many many people, and from what ive been able to tell it only happens with nero and with the newer versions.. ive stuck with 6.3.1.25 but ive heard that 6.3.1.17 is better even.. i think that if you flash your burner and re install your os and all apps.. etc it will read again.. to check this try your burner in another computer.. if it works then do as i mentioned.

first just try burner in different computer.. if nothing then find site and flash rom. do some research on the brand burner you have.. if its a liteon you have lots of options.

after flash put back in the other computer, not same as in now. im sure that will fix the issue..

if you have not idea about flashing rom RESEARCH it first.. its easy but you need to understand it.

post your results.. as i said this has been a long time issue and fortunately i havent had it crossing fingers.

EDIT: i jsut did a quick google and it looks like it might be a benQ 800 drive, and if so you have lots of options IE crossflashing etc to upgrade.. but aside from that.. the brand is good so go to cd freaks or google it..
