Well, I've just received the used DR-1000 that I bought on ebay. Those of you that use the DR-1000 for sharpening up VHS, what settings do you find to work the best for you? The manual suggests starting at 9:00 position for detail, 11:00 for sharpness, 12:00 for core and 1:00 for black, and using the F1 frequency, and then experimenting from there. I tried that and it looked pretty good, but I'm curious as to what other people think works best for them. I know less is more (i.e., avoid the common tendency to overdo sharpening), but what do you think works well for you?

  2. It depends on the quality of the source. For high quality, high resolution sources (laserdisc, S-VHS) you can generally use more sharpening and detail, and possibly set the "F" buttons to digital for smaller aperture (finer) enhancement. For VHS, you probably won't be able to push too much or you'll wind up with excessive noise. For digital sources like MiniDV, you may not be able to see much difference when applying sharpening because it may already be very detailed to start with. I avoid using the enhancement noise reduction (Core, Black). Bottom line is that it will take some trial and error to get the hang of using the DR-1000.

  3. Please share your results of this unit. I am curious if it really works as advertised. Does it increase noise/pixelation or produce halos around objects when sharpening? Could you post a before/after screenshot?

WIle_E, I'll see what I can do about posting some screen caps after experimenting a bit.
