  1. Hi,

Does anyone have first hand good luck with stand-alone DVD players that can play "user burned" DL DVD+R (ritek)? Basically play anything I throw at it. I live in the US.

I have spent the afternoon perusing reviews, and the closest I come to sucess is the Philips DVP 642.

I have an older SONY that can't, it stutters/freezes on second layer.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. I found that one about an hour after I asked the question. Thanks, I can get it for $50. Considering the cost of this do it yourself course so far, another $50 won't hurt.

  5. I found it at Tweeters. http://www.tweeters.com. That should be a real price and availability. While they may try to upgrade you when you get to the store, if they say available, it's available.

My Sony Sony DVP-NS715P pauses for one second

My Cyberhome CHDVD-500 plays through the layer change seamlessly

My Magnavox MDV456/16 plays through the layer change seamlessly

My Panasonic DMR-E10 DVD Recorder pauses slightly on the change

My Sony would have major hicups on the 2nd layer if I burned over 2.4x so my advice would be to try a slower burn speed.

  8. I've been burning at 2.4 all along. With the RiTek and the Plextor716, any attempts at anything faster is suicidal.

In doing some experimenting, I have come to the conclusion that many others before me have--Ritek is iffy media. The ones that fail to play on the hardware I am just chalking up to crap media.

I still might pick up that Pioneer, I could use it in another room.

Thanks to all who gave ideas/suggestions.
