I'm about to get my hands on one of them there Archos 700 units (someone owes me a chunk of £) and from the looks of the spec sheets, it's happy with AVI but only likes MPEG4.
Does this render all my old MPEGs completely useless, or can I convert up somehow?
Please be gentle, remember you're dealing with an idiot here.

The current version of ffmpegX should handle conversion of most things (MPEG1 and2, movs) to an avi that the Archos will read. It has "preset" conversion options, so is very straightforward to use these days.
Go off and rule the universe from beyond the grave. Or check into a psycho ward, whichever comes first, eh? -
Thanks, I'll check it out. Can't say as I had much luck using it to re-code for VCDs, but maybe this time it'll work.
