  1. I was wondering if anyone has any experiences to share regarding the picture quality of the new line of Pioneer recorders (DVR-x3x)? What worries me a bit is that they have started to use high resolutions at much lower bitrates compared to the previous line (DVR-x2x).

Have a look at this (PAL version):

Full D1 resolution at 210 minutes???

I am a bit worried that the new line will have more blocks than the old line.
The old line is already getting difficult to buy here in Sweden, so I am starting to think about whether I should try to get my hands on one of the old ones before they dissappear off the shelves.

  2. its the same from what i can tell. it uses the same encoding chip at 10bit 54mhz. as far as the maintenance of dvd res and macroblocks, i dont know as ive never tried 210minute mode but i assume it would look like shit.

I have three generations of Pio. recorders, including the new x3x (531, actually, which is 533 without Firewire sold by the Walmart chain).

I have used the higher recording time MN modes, including the 210 min. mode on my 531. Most of my experience with the recorder at those MN settings has been with dubbing VHS. While the macroblocks are more noticeable than at SP, I would say that the overall picture is preferable to LP, in my opinion. If the macroblocks at SP are noticeable and bother you, then stick with SP (the 53x and 63x can do dual layer, so you effectively get more content on disc).

Much depends on the content (most of what I have recorded has onlymoderate motion, so the lower average bitrate is acceptable to me). Also, how you view it will determine if it bothers you (if you pause, you see the blocks, which are less visible if just playing).

Pioneer is pretty much the same across the board. It's a good encoder, though not the best.

If you see blocks, your tv is too big, or you're looking too hard.
