Hello there VideoHelp members, regarding a purchase of a converter HDMI to S-Video, would it improve the quality of image to send an S-Video signal to HDMI. My satellite receiver only has an S-Video output and my TV does not have this input. Right now I have it hooked up with composite cable, I wanted to know if purchasing a converter to conect my S-Video and convert it to HDMI would help improve the current video resolution?

Converting a signal from S-Video to HDMI won't increase the resolution of the video. It will still be standard definition. Your TV may be able to upscale the video and zoom in to fill the screen, and while the resulting picture may look relatively good, it won't match real HD video. I'm currently running the S-Video output from my SD cable box through a DVD recorder with HDMI output, so I do know what I am talking about from first-hand experience.

[Edit] If you decide to get a converter anyway, it will need to be S-Video to HDMI, not HDMI to S-Video. Video converters are almost always one-way, so you really need to get one that converts in the direction you want to go.

[Edit 2] I spoke too soon. Here is an example of an S-Video to HDMI converter that upscales http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?seq=1&format=2&p_id=7111&CAWELAID=132945...FaXJtAodf08AxA

However, if your TV is a relatively new model it will probably do as well or better than an upscaling converter.

Excelent, thanks for the quick response, I guess, to see if i will buy it or not, the final question would be. By doing this conversion, would I get better quality than that of my actual setup? (or, could I take advantage of the S-Video's slightly superior quality than that of a composite?)

The upscaled and zoomed composite output from my DVD recorder looks only slightly less sharp than upscaled and zoomed HDMI output from my DVD recorder.
