My friend unplugged his 5005 machine and went on vacation. Upon return, he set it up properly-connections correct. When he records from tv, the screen says "recording" and the timer is counting time, but no picture is displayed. After recording, he goes to run the video and it is blank or a recording is indicated, but no picture comes on the screen when the play button is pressed. Is this a defect in the machine, or what? He uses DVD+RW discs.

Just a thought, make sure that he checks the source for the recording. I recorded a few VHS tapes with mine which worked flawlessly and then two days later thought it had quit working. After rechecking all the settings I had forgot to set the source, now it works or still works fine. Have done 12 tapes so far with the 5005 and then edited the crap out of front and back with SHRINK and then burn with copytodvd. All have come out really looking good on my 42in TV.

I picked up my 5005 already hacked on Ebay, new and in the box. Macrovision free and 3hr recording enabled for 99.00.

He set the source to AV2 (rear,) which is correct and no soap.
