I would say that XviD is the best ASP MPEG-4 video codec if that is what you mean, although 3ivX also includes an aac encoder and mp4 muxer.

mp4 is a container. XviD is an ASP MPEG-4 video codec.
XviD handles ASP decoding from mp4 fine as does ffdshow.

Nero however can do AVC and ASP.
For mp4 playback you need a splitter, plus decoders for the video and audio. ffdshow can also handle aac audio, but you still need a splitter such as Haali's.

your computer may be not powerful enough to decode on the fly -- dont blaim 3ivx for this

  8. You might try VLC Media Player.

I recode to Nero Digital's MP4 version and they play well in the freeware VLC Media Player. However, I cannot be sure if VLC is using its own codec or one I already have on my PC.

I saw a post elsewhere that said VLC DOES supply its own codec(s).

    Good luck!
