I was perusing this fine info in my search for greater knowledge, well, really ANY knowledge on what I did wrong the other day. I came upon the above subject and thought I would ask everyone their personal opinion on the best program to use for this. It named Virtual Dub, etc. Then, at the end, it said I could use the TMPGEnc that i already have to do this. BUT...it said it would take awhile to perform the task. Does this mean that the other programs mentioned beforehand (ie. Virtual Dub etc)do this task quicker than TMPGEnc? Or, is it just another option? I would love any advice on this besides giving up!\
    Thanks, Tracey

I assume that you already have an MPEG 1 or 2 file to convert to VCD or SVCD to play on a standalone DVD player and that Nero or other burning s/w doesn't accept this. As I see it there are three "levels" of MPEG currently, the basic level as captured by some cards like the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR are the most basic, they are PES or Packetized Elementary streams, the next "level is the true ISO complient MPEGs and finally, there are the VCD & SVCD complient files, which contain the necessary framing information for FF & Rew etc. These are sometimes refered to as Program and Streaming but I'm not too clear on this.

However the basic multiplexer in TMPGenc will usually do the conversion, see

    http://www.vcdhelp.com/faq.htm#repairmpg

the menus are clear enough. A simple multiplex usually takes only a few minuites (encoding takes ages & ages)

    Interesting URL at

    http://www.offeryn.de/dv.htm

but I've never really found the tools there usful to me.

Fair enough, KuskenLars. I have been reading miles and miles of the inructions and guides for 2 weeks now. So, when you ask for more info, the only thing I know to tell you is that the movie is: Star Wars Episode 1.1 The Phantom Edit Part 2 of 2 Divx 3.11a video clip, the time is 56:06 and the file is 106,414. I used Nero to burn it and got no sound. I was half asleep at 5am, after reading and printing the instructions to go by step by step, and the outcome after over an hour was no audio (except loud electronic noises) and crappy video.

    To Panash,
Yes, the guides semm easy to someone that knows more about computers than how to cruise the internet and read email. I know this. By reading my post to Kuns, do you think I possibly did NOT encode with TMPGEnc before burning? Would Nero take that long to burn? There were no error messages during the process at all. I will read more on multiplexing, like you suggested. AND, I am thankful for your suggetions and pointing me in the right direction! It just seemed to me as I was reading the subject title I listed as "subject" in this site, that TMPGEnc takes longer to convert to a compatible VCD. I might be using the wrong terminology there. But, maybe you can get where I am going with this.
    Thanks, Tracey

  6. You mentioned you converted from DivX ? did you remember to use VirtualDub to decode the Audio into a WAV file so you can use it with TMPGEnc when encoding ?

I think we posted almost simultaneously as I didn't read your reply to thump01 - sorry if it seemed patronizing - leave it to Sefy to answer.

Yes, it is HIGHLY recommanded you use VirtualDub to extract the Audio into a WAV file and use that as the Audio source in TMPG!
