I am having a strange issue...the basic problem is that when I play my burned DVD on certain DVD players, after certain chapters it will return to the main menu instead of playing the next chapter. This does not happen everytime (it happens maybe 50% of the time) nor does it happen on all DVD players, so I am not sure where to strat problem solving. Here are some details.
    1) Exported several different MPEG files from Adobe Premiere elements. Two of the files were encoded using TMPGenc instead of Premiere.
    2) Used Ulead DVD Moviefactory 3.5 to create menus and add these MPEG files to the DVD.
    3) In Ulead, there is a setting for what to do at the end of the clip, and it is set to play the next clip.
    4) Originally in Ulead, there was an option to have the DVD restart at the end, however I unchecked this and it seems to play better now in one of my DVD players now, however in some DVD players it still reverts back to the main menu after certain chapters. Again, it only happens about 60% of the time.

Any idea what is causing this? I am not sure if the DVD players don't like my TDK printable DVD-R disc and that is causing the DVD player to think that it hit the end of the DVD, thus taking it back to the main menu, or if it is something going on with Moviefactory. I was also wondering if you thought it may be related to encoding most of the files with Adobe Premiere instead of using the Ulead encoder, I will probably try a test using only the Ulead encoder to see if this still happens, but to me it doesn't seem like it should matter what you use to encode it as long as it is in the DVD format. All of my encoded MPEG files do have the audio as MPEG vs PCM so it will all fit (I don't have any AC-3 encoders). Please give me some ideas as to what may be causing this odd issue as it is really frustrating me. All I want is the DVD to play thru without reverting to the main menu.

  2. Could be the authoring process, did u try play it on powerdvd, before
    burning...
i would suggest trying a software that has the playall feature[Dvdlab]
just load all the mpeg, create a playall button, then test before burning.

Are you letting the DVD Play through, or are you hitting the [Next] button on your remote control

Sometimes hitting the [Next] button on a remote control will bypass the proper code to continue playing the next video clip.

Thanks for the ideas. I did manage to duplicate this problem using winDVD on my computer. Again, it doesn't happen all the time, but about 1/2 the time it will revert to the menu after a "title" as it calls it in WinDVD. So what does that indicate? To me, it seems that says it may not be the disk and maybe either the burning or authoring process...but I am still moderately new at this so let me know what you think. I will try downloading DVDlab tonight and try it out tomorrow. I am also trying to have ulead moviefactory encode all the video files (instead of using Premiere) and see if that does anything.

Hey, I just thought of a great test, I mounted the disk image file which is on my hard drive and then trying playing the DVD off my virtual drive (which had image mounted). I am still able to duplicate the problem using WinDVD, so I guess it must either be that MovieFactory doesn't like importing MPEG files from Premiere, or Moviefactory is just not doing something correctly. I will try to have moviefactory encode all the avi files to see if it is just an import from Premiere issue.

George has an interesting point. To test this, I have typically gone to the chapter using the menu, then it starts playing then I use the time search to bring me to 30 seconds before the end of that chapter. In doing this, am I bypassing the code to continue playing the next video clip?? Each chapter is about 20 minutes, so I am not very excited about needing to watch each chapter all the way thru to see if it happens (esp. since it only happens about 50% of the time).

    Thanks for the ideas,
    Andrew

I have experienced the same thing. I have one DVD player that will treat titles as chapters, and go from one to the next, and another one that won't.

I don't think this is a defect in the way you've created your DVD's but, just a lack of subtlety in the programming of some players.

A title is not the same as a chapter. On a commercial DVD, it's the special features which are separate titles, and you do have to go back to the main menu to access them.

Are you saying that it's random (whether it goes back to the menu or keeps on going?). That would be extremely surprising! If it really is random, you should check if somehow, the rnd() function isn't used as one of the commands in your DVD (I have no idea why it would). You can use PgcEdit to look for "rnd". But this would make no sense to me...
Now, if it's not random, but happens on 1 chapter and not on another, it's easy to go to PgcEdit, and see what the difference is between the two... At least that's what I would do. Obviously, there's something not done quite properly. Probably a NextPGC field that's not set correctly in one of the PGCs...
