Just received the Panasonic ES10K dvd recorder I ordered, but noticed on the box there was a warning that it will NOT record from any dvd other than a Region 1 or All Region, so I have not opened it yet... still need more information before I decide to return it or not.
I want to transfer my old VHS tapes to dvd, as well as record some tv shows, but... I'd also like to back up some non-Region 1 dvd's I've bought overseas, since they'll ONLY play on the Philips DVD player I hacked into, but not on the other dvd players in the house (that I haven't found hack codes for).
There doesn't seem to be a hack code for this model, so my question is: IF I play the non-Region 1 dvd's on a player that WILL play anything (any region, NTSC and PAL), will the Panasonic recorder still not recognize it (I guess meaning, is the code on the actual DVD being played, or on the machine itself)??
If I can't bypass this problem, can anyone suggest an alternative machine to get, or another way of backing up my "foreign" dvds?
I can live without backing them up, but... it sure would be nice.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Yes, I still need help... no one has yet answered my question:
"IF I play the non-Region 1 dvd's on a player that WILL play anything (any region, NTSC and PAL), will the Panasonic recorder still not recognize it (I guess meaning, is the code on the actual DVD being played, or on the machine itself)??"
Can you tell me?
Thanks,

RedAzalea,
The Panasonic DVD recorders sold in North America will play only “Region1” and “Region 0” NTSC recorded DVD’s. If you have DVD player that will play and convert anything at your NTSC TV set, it will be perfect feeder for your Panasonic DVD recorder. The recorded DVD’s made this way will be “Region 0”. -
NTSC DVD region 0 (also known as ALL) => PLAY
NTSC DVD region 1 => PLAY
NTSC DVD region 2..6 => NO
PAL DVD any region => NO

Your Philips can convert PAL -> NTSC so *in theory* the Panasonic should be able to record the signal coming from the Philips *BUT* the problem here will be Macrovision protection. You will need a DVD player that: is all region, properly converts PAL -> NTSC, can disable Macrovision.
When copying DVDs, best to use a computer anyways. It will be a digital copy whereas DVD -> DVD dubbing will almost surely be analogue. There's other benefits doing it the computer method too.
