  1. I have an external 120 gig HD and it's partitioned into 2. Recently everytime I turn it on, the second partition works well for the first few minutes, then I get this message.

Any ideas of what I could do

Did you unplug the external hard drive at anytime while the pc was still on? Usually that error msg is when the drive is unplugged without going through the little icon in your taskbar that says, "UNPLUG or EJECT HARDWARE". To safely remove the external drive you would have to click on that icon to safely remove/stop the drive otherwise you will lose or corrupt the data on there.

Nope...it's always plugged in. It's happened in the past, but not so often that it annoyed me, I would turn it off then on and it would fix things. Now, it's all the time on that partition.

I get that once in a while with my laptop external FW HD when I read a file that locks up the program momentarily, happens when trying to read corrupted video or data files. This can be one cause of that type of read/write error.

You can right click on the drive icon and go to Properties > error checking and check both boxes there, then 'Start'. May not help if the partition is corrupted, but worth a try.

If the partition is corrupted...is all there left for me to do is format?

EDIT: How long does error-checking usually take? It's been sitting at phase 4 for quite a while. No progress in the progress bar, but the HD is being accessed.

It can take a while if there are problems. Just let it run. Usually after I get that type of error, I reboot and the OS fixes it. Probably runs the same error checking and repair.

Generally the data may be somewhat corrupted but not totally lost dispite what the popup says.

I only use my external 10G drive for transfer to another computer, so I reformat instead of repairing if I have major problems, but I believe there are repair options that are less destructive. Maybe someone else has a few ideas on that.
