How can I save to txt or doc file the subtitles ?

I have some DVD's which have foreign language soundtracts and subtitles and I would like to print out the subtitles so I can study them when not watching the movie.

I downloaded VOBSub and tried to do this but I got lost; looking in the directory where the subtitle files were suppossed to be, there was nothing. Can somebody recommend a simple to use program which has a simple guide so that I can print out the subtitles ? I looked through the subtitle section of this site but it is mostly about adding subtitles which is alot more complicated than what I need to do.

I have tmpgenc installed along with Sonic MYdvd, dvdshrink, dvddecrypter and virtual dub.

I guess I am getting senile as I have forgotten most of the stuff I knew about this a couple of years ago.

I found a nice tutorial at WeetHet dot nl about using vobsub. I am now able to see the subtitles in a program of vobsub called subresync. However, I am unable to view or print out the subtitles in a text or word file. Any suggestions ? I am not looking to include the files in a DVD, rather simply print out the subtitles.

Maybe you could try to find those subtitles on the net.

Normal (not avi/divx...) DVD subtitles are images, not text. Therefore you cannot simply print or put them in a text document. You have to run a OCR program (like subrip or dvdsubedit) to get 'editable' text.

I'm a newbie in this too, but can't you open the subtitles with notepad, I mean, thats what I always do, or you can send me the file and I'll pass the subs to a doc file, and I'll send it back to you. (I'll try)

He's talking about the subs direct from the DVD. They're image (picture) files, and have to be OCR'd into some sort of text format, as already described. Only then can they be opened in Notepad.

Yep. As people have already said, use SubRip to convert the subtitles to text via OCR, save them as a .srt file, then open it with some text editor for printing. You may want to remove the additional codes before printing too, or maybe you're interested in keeping them for reference, it's your choice.
