Could anyone recommend a good dvdrom for ripping other than LITEON? I've only used TOSHIBA 1612's & 1712's DVDROM's. I need to replace a LITEON COMBO that died after a year in my relatives pc. I've read AOPEN DVDROMS are suppose to be good at ripping. I would appreciate any suggestions and comments. Thanks in advance.

  2. My Pioneer DVR109 crossflashed to the A09XL firmware rips like a champ so far. I was getting almost 11x on a dual layer rip the other morning.

  3. I can also safely say that even with riplock removed the NEC3520A sucks at ripping. I maxed only 7.2x on the same disc I just got 10.5x on with the pioneer.

    Lite-on is best

Ripping at a max of 22 here .

Note : stay well away from combo units , they are nothing but trouble .

Besides , lite-on is what I use for specific copying needs .

Thanks for all the responses! After doing some research I've decided to purchase a AOPEN 1648 from Newegg.com. I'm disappointed with LITEON because only after a years time it died.

How in the hell do you make your DVD-ROM rip faster than 16X ?

I've always thought that 16X was the 52X of CD-ROMS - the absolute max safe level. Also, have I just been blind, or has anyone ever seen a DVD-ROM advertised as reading at > 16X ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

I always felt you get a drive to rip at > 16x by luck only. I've seen this happen in some drives, but not in others of the same model number.

And durability of a drive also can't be predicted. With falling prices due to cut-throat competition, quality is gradually being sacrificed. Probably HP and Pioneer drives have the best workmanship. But opinions are certain to differ.

    Thanks.

I had my relative purchase a BENQ 1620 instead of a regular DVD-ROM since the cost was only $39.99 from Computergeeks.com.
