This dude at work told me about this penny stock he's been watching and made some money on. So anyway today I bought $2000 worth and made $181 in like 2 hours!

Ah, yes. Remember "back in the day" when there were day traders at every brokerage house? I remember going to Waterhouse (one of my two brokers, the other being Schwab) and seeing about a dozen of those guys crowded around a terminal in the office. That was before the capability of trading online was widespread.
That was c.1999 or so. I remember thinking "what happens if the market goes south on them?"
Then in 2000, when it did, they all disappeared. By 2002, I walked into my local Schwab office and it was quiet as a morgue. A couple of guys sitting at a desk doing essentially nothing. I didn't have to wait to talk to someone, at least :P
Because there were so few people trading (as compared to the go-go days of the late 90's) Schwab starting raising fees and charging for things that used to be free. For example, they used to have a Visa card where they would reimburse you for any fees charged for using it at any ATM anywhere in the world. It was unlimited, but later they changed it to only 8 uses per month. Even later, they took it away from clients with less than a certain amount in their account (I think it was around $500,000).
Only very recently they have started to bring back some of the things they took away and dropped some fees. So things must be getting a little better.
Nonetheless, I'd not be risking a large amount of money on penny stocks. They have a tendency to go belly up when you least expect it. Usually right after a "glowing" earnings report.

The closest I'm willing to get to penny stocks is the Fidelity Contra fund

They were screwed :P -

Sinking it all in one company is just bad news. They guys learned that, and regret the day they ever heard of the company. Too bad it was after they lost all that money.
Penny stocks can be very smart to invest in, as long as you don't go nuts. It's like betting on a single number at roulette. Fine to drop a few bucks on it ....just in case, because the payoff is so good. But you'd never, ever drop all your money on that number -

So....can I buy stocks online without a bunch of fees? -
hi,
i'm in...how do i start thayne? never traded before so i have no idea how to start with...give us some start/tips plsthanks
-
It's upto .28 cents now
Made another $2000 today!
All you have to do to get started is open an account with scottrade, ameritrade or where ever. I like scottrade cause their fees are lower.
The fees for penny stocks are $12 per trade plus 1/2%
For regular stocks it's only $7."Terminated!" :firing: -
Here are some I own and like. Made money with all of them:
QQQQ NASDAQ 100. - Good safe but slow growth
CHK Chesapeake Energy Corporation - Good safe growth
Colonial BancGroup, Inc. (CNB) - Good safe growth
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) - One of my favorites and should go up nicely next year!!! I'm up almost 50% this year...
NEOM.OB - Very high risk, very high potential. I'm up 113% since November"Terminated!" :firing: -
