Anyone know a programme that you can run a corrupt video through to clean it.

Why would you want to convert it to avi? As this was asked in the DVD Authoring forum, I assumed you wanted to take the mpeg and author it to DVD. Avi files are not supported in the DVD spec, and all you're going to do is degrade the quality of the video from the added compression that you'll get when compressing to avi.
If you're trying to save corrupted video, you could try cutting out the corrupted portion with a program like Cuttermaran.
