  1. Hello. I downloaded an mpeg/dat file that was 515 mb. When I played the file, there seemed to be a few minutes missing at the end, so I found another source offering the same file that was 620 mb. I renamed the first file and started downloading the second file.

In doing this, I assumed that 1.) they are the exact same files, with the second being the complete file, and that 2.) the second file would download where the first left off and all would be fine--that they'd just connect.

Problem is, it turns out they are different encodes of the same movie. Now the first file seems to have been "corrupted" by the additional 105 MB that I downloaded.

Does anyone know if I can salvage the original 515 mb file by just "deleting" the additional 105 mb? Please help!

I would suggest you are pretty much screwed. If you had a hex editor and could find exactly the point where the two join you *might* have a chance. Your best bet is to download the complete source correctly.

  3. There should be no connection between the new and old file. The two should be completely seperate, unless you renamed to the same name as the new one in which case the original file would be completely overwritten. If the second download seemed to affect the first file, I would check your hard drive for some sort of mechanical problem and/or virus.
