  1. I have this JVC home DVD recorder:

I just noticed that the new discs that I bought were mixed up with the DVD-R section and I accidently grabbed DVD+R dvd discs. Will they still work for my player?

  2. A quick check of the manual for this deck on JVC's website says -- no. Sorry. This model supports DVD-R/RW only (also DVD-RAM) but not DVD+R. So you gotta take 'em back and just tell 'em you got the wrong format, I'll bet it's not problem to exchange.

As for your global question of "do DVD+R's work for DVD recorders," the answer is, it depends. Some brands/models can do only -R, some do only -R; I'm not familiar with any dual-format (+ or -) stand-alone recorders but I'm sure somebody out there has one, maybe they'll chime in.

Buy a good recorder. THEN buy discs for it.
If you have extra discs now, use them elsewhere.
Buying a DVD recorder because of disc type is not smart shopping.

Absolutely. But what's that got to do with this person's situation? It appears that he (or she) has a good recorder and got the wrong format discs by mistake and for whatever reasons, didn't know more than that. So he asked here. And we answer him that these discs won't work. It may or may not be worth it to save these for later; if this is the only DVD device this person owns, or if his DVD burner in his computer is a -R only burner, keeping a stack of DVD+R's around in hopes of using them later on may or may not be something he's interested in doing. So there's a bunch of "it depends" in this whole scenario.

But yeah, to minimize these kind of problems, double-checking the label is always a good idea, "smart shopping," and will save you headaches later on though -- my wife thought she was buying cans of spaghetti sauce and they turned out to be plain tomato sauce when I was digging in the cupboard later, sure put a crimp on my dinner plans. :P

Not sure if you were saying that you were not sure if they have dual format standalones or just that you were not familiar with any personaly ?
But yeah, they have some, just saw one in the best buy ad this week, records both + & - formats. Although i would never buy it because it's made by.......... sony
But the majority of them have seemed to be -R format, as is mine.
But i see now that it almost seem's a large majority of standalones are becoming dual format.

I mis-read the question. But it's still good general advice. :P

Answer to question: Take back DVD+R, buy DVD-R.
