I am using Pinnacle Studio 8 (v. 8.12) with a DC10+ card, for archiving home video movies from my analog Hi8 camcorder to DVDs.
I have a computer with a Duron 1.3 Ghz, 256 MB RAM, a 2nd HDD 80 GB for video capturing and editing.
My purpose is to make DVD with video of similar quality as the original Hi8.
I am capturing at custom quality 4000 Kb/s (AVI).
My question is:
when making the DVD, which datarate to use, to keep the best quality, but put as much as possible video on DVD:
-the DVD best quality setting (8000 Kb/s) with about 1 hr video on DVD-R
-or a custom setting: 4000 Kb/s? 6000 Kb/s? other?

First you need sufficient capture rate and resolution.
max your resolution to 640 x 480
max your MJpeg rate to 3:1 or the best your machine will go.
For DVD encoding, closest resolution is 704x480
You can't go wrong using full 8,000Kb/s CBR for 1 hr.
You might want to experiment at 6,000Kb/s CBR
4,000Kb/s would be too low.
Camcorder video is shakey and probably won't benefit from VBR.
That card is not really up to Hi8 quality. Max it out on capture and hope for the best.
