Hi, I missed and forgot the eagles farewell special; a friend gave me his version to view on my computer (from an hd feed), but I'd rather watch from a television. I burned the feed (hd avi xbid) to a dvd, but the problem is the image is distorted in the video - the sound works, however.

I imagine this is because of the hd encoding. Is there some way to convert the file into something that will play on my dvd player?

    Thanks!

  2. Open it in virtualdub.
Select filters, resize, and don't adjust the two top boxes, but letterbox it by adjusting the bottom two boxes.
You'll have to resave it, using a compression codec, but shouldn't lose too much quality.

p.s. I recorded the same thing on my PVR-250 and it's perfect for DVD once the commercials are edited out.

Convert it (as posted above) using virtual dub or am I missing something?

    Thanks!

Hmm...let me also ask this: is the reason I can't play the dvd (actually, it plays but the images are distorted) because of the xvid format or th HD?

    thanks!

  6. What do you mean by distorted? Is it stretched?
This plan is so bad, it must be one of ours.

Not stretched, but like blocks of semi-correct video blurred and out of position...

No, I don't think its a problem with the video. windows media will play it, but it is distorted also. That is, the version burnt to a dvd and played on a regular dvd player is identical to that seen when playing in windows media player.

However, both vlc and nero showtime show the video just fine on the pc. Again, its an hd xvid avi file, so I'm not sure what exactly needs to be done to be able to play it in a regular dvd player?

I just tried virtual dub, and added the resize filter. I wasn't sure what settings to put the bottom 2 boxes on so I left it as the default:
    320 width x 240 height

Anyways, after 1.5 hours I got a 30+gb file from a 700 MB hd xvid file. This is odd (to me) since the video size has now been decreased!

Anyway, the now 30gb version now plays in windows media player non-distorted. However, the image quality is not at all up to par with the original. Plus, I'm not sure how to put 30 gigabytes on a single dvd ?

You need to read some conversion guides (found in the menu to your left) - specifically avi to mpeg. Or run it through VSO DivxtoDVD.
    Read my blog here.

Sounds like you made an uncompressed .avi. Did you select a codec in virtualdub?

  13. I was assuming (wrongly, I know) that you may know how to use virtualdub.
It was only a suggestion, to letterbox the video properly, which you did not do.
You must look at the output (right hand) box, to get the aspect correct.
Once you have that, you can then frameserve to re-encode to mpeg-2 for dvd, or resave an avi.
To resave an avi, you would NOT resize it smaller, keep it the same as the original (in the top two boxes), but add black borders top and bottom, to get the correct aspect for 4:3 TV.
Select video, compression, to select a codec if you're going to save another avi.

    He did everything wrong.

That's what I'd use. VSO DivXToDVD.

    Hi:

Well, DivXtoDVD worked just fine. I do have a few things to clear up if you guys don't mind?

    1. So, the reason I wasn't able to get correct looking video is because my hd xvid video was in mpeg-4, correct?

    2. Is HD synominous with xvid? That is, can there be an HD video not encoded in mpeg-4?

    3. Any idea why nero wasn't smart enough to convert the xvid to mpeg-2? After all, I was using nero's "create dvd" option...It produced a working dvd, but the video was unwatchable (as mentioned up top).

    Thanks!

Since I have no idea what you actual did in the first place, I will assume that you burned an XviD data DVD with Nero that your DVD player was not capable of playing.

What you eventually ended up making with VSO DivXToDVD was an actual DVD movie that was mean't to play on a stand alone DVD player.

    1. Had nothing to do with the XviD file but what you tried to do with it.
    2. Have no idea what you even mean by HD XviD (high quality?).
    3. It isn't Nero's job to be smart enough to know what you want it to do and as far as I know, it's not a video converter or DVD authoring tool.
