Hi everybody, I'm new here, I'm really impressed of all the posts of solutions to problems.
I've been toying with avi-mpg conversion all evening without luck, and then I came across this forum...
The problem is like this:
I'm using Virtual Dub 1.3c to convert an asf-file to avi-file, using "Direct Stream Copy" on the Video and Audio menu of VirtualDub. The conversion completes in about 1 minute. Then I'm using TMPGEnc to convert the avi-file into an mpeg-file, but the problem is that I don't get any picture on the mpeg-file, just black screen, but the audio is there.
When I'm using Xing Mpeg Encoder 2.20 to convert the avi-file to mpeg, I get an error message saying the avi file is either in use by another editor/software or that the file is not supported.
And then I try another encoder, LSX Mpeg Encoder 3.5, and try opening the avi-file, I get the error message "Audio stream has unsupported format or compression type".
When you meet such problems all the way along, you kind of start to get tired...
I think it's Virtual Dub 1.3c's fault in converting the asf-file to the avi-file, which obviously seems to be detected as a bad avi-file by many softwares.
I really hope someone's experienced this problem and have some hints to give me, thanks![]()

hey i have done this before...use virtual dub direct stream save avi and then use tmpngce to convert worked fine for me which movie are you trying to convert? Another thing is the lsx mpeg encoder you have to decompress the audio in the video file for the program to work..

have you installed the DivX 4 codec? You will probably also need to install Crytal Studio Pack. Both can be found in 'Tools' on the left. Does the avi file play fine once you convert it from asf?

Hey, thanks, the Cristal Studio Pack did help, Xing Mpeg Encoder was willing to take the avi-file, but of course a new problem had to come up, this time it's the actual avi-mpeg conversion that doesn't do that well, the whole thing's crashing a few seconds after the encoding start.
But then there's another problem (oh god!). Before I can use Virtual Dub 1.3c to convert the asf-file to avi, I have to fix the asf-file, because Virtual Dub won't open it due to some segment faults in the file. I use Asfcut 2.0 to fix the asf-file, only to find that the whole thing's crashing right before I reach the last megabyte of the file, that would say the file's 272 mb and I only reach 271 mb. And of course Virtual Dub won't open this corrupted file.
Any hints anyone?
I'm trying to convert a Chinese tv-series by the way, and when there's like 20-30 files like this, you kind of get really.....
